    Raid cards

Hi i have several servers here but only basic knowledge about raid
My understanding of raid is like this
I have a server with 4 disk on it and if i put it in raid 1
and want to install an OS i can only see 2 of the disks right? (thats how it works on my ibm server)
But with my other servers if i put them in raid 1 and want to install OS i can still see all 4 disks thats not right is it?
anyone that can recommend a pci raid card for 4 sata2 disks?

When you create a RAID volume, you see a single volume. You should not see the physical disks at all.
Is there any particular reason why you want RAID-1 with 4 disks? The logical configuration would be RAID-10 which means you get the storage capacity of two disks, additional performance and you still have the redundancy of data mirroring.

the raid 1 is just for "explanation" i have a promise fasttrack card of some kind and when i put the card in whatever raid i choose and wants to install an OS then i can see all 4 disks
In my ibm server i have 2 x 146 Gb disks and if i put them in raid 1 i can ONLY use the 146 GB and everythings is ok but with my fasttrack card i can install on whatever disk i want and i can only imagine that its wrong

No matter which Raid you use 0,1,5,etc... you will always see one drive.
Raid 0 one big drive (2 drives combined)
Raid 1 one drive with the capacity of the smaller drive - similar to mirroring (minimum 2)
Raid 5 one drive with the capacity of ~60% of the total capacity of all drives (minimum 3)

    okay
when i boot my server i can press "ctrl + f " then im in the fasttrack card then i can choose between "secure" and "optimization" if i choose secure it says i have 400Gb back (4x250gb) so i guess its raid 1
Then i boot on my debian cd and when i comes to installing i can see all my harddrives and choose where i want to install that shoulden be right

Different RAID hardware handle things differently, some coin their own terms, and that just confuses the situation. I would really suggest consulting the manual, and finding out what those generic terms are actually meaning in this context. If a RAID card does what a RAID card is classically know to do, it, behind the scenes, manages your disks and combines them in some RAID fashion, and presents only one drive to your operating system. But I do know that this is not always the case, I have seen before configurations where all drives, plus the RAID drive show up to the operating system, and you should only use the RAID drive. So you really need to consult the manual.
