Is there a reason you need a VPS at this time? What are your actual requirements? Until you get to around 50 concurrent users you should be OK on a good shared host.
I would recommend looking into Semi-Dedicated rather than VPS unless you have the time and ability to manage a VPS and ensure it is correctly set up to support your community.

my question also, do you really need a VPS? And there isn't a "best X for phpBB". Just about anyone can host a script and do it very well. LIke Coldkill mentioned it's more to do with the resources you'll need, support required, etc...
As for your list I really haven't heard of most of them and don't know much at all about any of them. Have you searched these forums for reviews?

A few of these above aren't VPS hosting providers at all. Of course I may not comment any particular web host, but just take a look at their websites and you'll see who's selling overselling hosting and who's in VPS hosting

I have to agree that knownhost is a quality VPS provider. Hostican i think does a pretty good job as well. You do have to know a bit about managing the server to make sure it is setup right, but i think you are right that it might be a better option over the shared oversellers (if hostmonster will disable your site so will all the rest), so you should look at a good quality shared host or a vps server yes. I've heard some people mention a small orange is pretty good but i am sure others with more shared experience can chime in on that one.

I highly recommend WiredTree.com's VPS packages. You do not need to think about managing it as you get a peace of mind knowing your VPS is in the right hands. They also include free cPanel and WHM.
Go check them out, they're really great!

I was exactly in your position months before. I was forced to change to VPS. money First I went for a cheap provider. I had enough from them. No proper support and performance was very bad. I am just a beginner. I am not well versed in managing a VPS or something and they are supposed to provide atleast a descent support.
After that I posted a topic over here, just like you and I chose KnownHost . I had seen several reviews about them. They have excellent support and very good performance. I chose VPS LCa plan with 256 MB ram.
I would say you should go for a VPS provider with excellent support since you are a beginner and I strongly recommend KnownHost

You have to know Linux command line in addition to cpanel / whm knowledge.
