how would i set this up. VOIP?

Hey guys.
Im wondering how i would set this up.
Ideally i want to get a sip phone which connects to a server (my server, so sip based control panel or something) which allows me to call other people on my server for free by giving them an extension number(eg 614), but if they want, they can then dial an out side which then connects to a service like terra sip, i would also like some kind of software which logs calls, location, length etc
Is this possible, so im effectivly becoming a VOIP provider but on a fairly small scale.
Ive currently got a VPS to do this on (Xen) which i can select Centos 4/5 to do this with.
Best,
Nathaniel

Yep, you can do this. Install a soft switch of your choice, Asterisk, FreeSwitch, SipX, ... and you're good to go. Most of these will have a steep learning curve to get the most out of these packages and to do things right, but you can of course also use a "dumbed down" web interface. If you'd rather not spend a good number of hours to set everything up, you can also look into hosted PBX providers. It comes down to how much time you have and how much you want to learn...

Hi, thanks for that. SipX looks like it is for me. Another quick question. Is it just possible to forward the call to another sip provider instead of having a ptsn card in the server?
Best,

Is a VPS just as good as a regular server in terms of uptime, and do many VPS support/use some type of load balancing?

A VPS *can* be just as good as a dedicated server in terms of uptime. Obviously it will depend on the underlying server but if that's available so should the VPSs be.

As far as load balancing - that would be done as it would on a normal dedicated server (unless you mean load balancing of the actual VPSs across multiple host nodes. That's possible depending on the virtualization software but wouldn't really affect how you used your VPS)

You can use VOIP clearly if you have good internet connection. My experience in using VOIP is that there is always static and always time out. But you can install it easily.

It depends entirely on your connection and the VoIP service you are using or hosting as far as clarity and static are concerned.

U can use Asterisk+A2Billing but running on vps is absolutely not recommended.
