Game Server questions
I am contemplating on whether or not to open a game server company and I have a few questions.
Here are the server specs:
Server Processor Intel Core2Quad Q9300
RAM 4gb DDR2
Hard Drive 640gb SATA
Uplink Port Speed 100mbps
Bandwidth 2000gb
Operating System Windows 2003 Standard (64bit)
IP Addresses 32 IPs (29 usable)
My questions are
1) Could I fit around 100 slots of 100 tick servers on this machine?
2) Do I have enough bandwidth to run a gsp, because I really don't want to go over?

Specs are fantastic for hosting game servers.
1. I would say that is a average accurate slot range for HL2 engine.
2. You have to keep your server managed and watch the load closely when hosting HL2 engine games, there RAM hogs.
3. That is plenty of bandwidth to start, again you must also watch for high slot pubs taking more bandwidth than you expect, but if you plan to host private servers that get used maybe a few times a day, it is fine.
Since your using Windows, I would recommend you to use TCAdmin game control panel.
Good luck!

To touch on the bandwidth. I have a 24 slot public server on one of my dedicated boxes that uses 600GB of bandwidth per month with an average player count of 14 which means you'd have to be careful but as you have said 100 100tick slots I'm guessing you're going to be wanting to sell war servers which means you "should" be fine depending on slot counts. Expect higher usage in the evenings depending on your clients and also take into account SourceTV (if you're going to be offering it). The CPU

That is very good specs for what you are trying to do.
You may want to upgrade the RAM depending on the games you decide to host.
Slots wise, you can have about 600 if there are zero people in them. As a GSP, you will see that many people buy servers, and then quit to fill them, in which their 32 slot CoD:WW server is just sitting there. With people, you could probably get 100-200 smoothly.
The Sources game use more CPU then RAM with stock settings btw.
The CoD series use a lot of RAM, and little CPU.
2000GB will be fine for a month for about 4 full 48 slot servers, just to give an example.

2000GB of bandwidth is great to start your first box off with. Although if you can get an extra 4 gigs of ram that would be ideal, that way you can run a few more game servers. Might I ask who your dedicated server is hosted by?
Let me know if you have any other questions. I can offer you game files etc, you will find my contact information in my signature below. Good luck with starting your business man.

I would say your not ready to run a GSP, sorry to be a blow but do some more reasearch first dont just dive into this. reason being you need more than 1 server really you cannot just host all your clients off the one box like you can proberly get away with in web hosting with some good management.
if you have about 5-8 really active 14+ slot servers your really easilly going to go over that 2000gb bandwidth limit weather it be hl game or cod4.
I would say hire an experienced tech before going into this.
just my 2cents.

This guy hasn't logged on in a month, doubt he'll see this thread. That box could probably hold a decent amount of 100 tick servers if it had more RAM.

Actually I check the forums often, but this post was from December 2008 and someone dug it up.
Oh and to the guy that says I need more research, I have been administering gameservers for a couple years now for my clan.

Having experience running a game server and running a company hosting game servers is a very different thing.
I've known game server techs who are considered the best around when it comes to setting up/troubleshooting game servers and that's what they excel at. Being a company owner and overseeing the business takes a very, very different set of skills.
This would be akin to handing over the decision making of an entire baseball club to the starting pitcher.. No doubt he's great at what he does but running the whole club?
Food for thought
