Help with what type of hosting I will need please
Hi all, I'm a budding website owner looking for advice on what will suit my needs over the next year. I have at most a few hundred visitors a day now, but things will be growing. Here are a few details:
Expected needs over next year:
1) from 2000-10000 visitors a day
2) Need managed services (Shared hosting or managed VPS/Server)
Conditions:
1) mix of static and wordpress
2) wordpress theme is quite light on needs (see below)
*Wordpress details:
1) lightweight theme
2) Removed as many database calls as possible (comments, date, author, blog name etc are removed. Just the post title and post contents are retrieved during the loop) The sidebar is one text widget with hand placed links.
3) No comments, pingbacks, or logged in users besides myself
4) ~40 custom added if-else-ifelse statement per page load
5) Minimal graphics - ~30KB, most of which is reused in theme on each page - maybe 15KB unique on some pages
6) No fancy widgets, flash chat, or anything similar
7) minimal plugins - all in one seo, Pagebar2, Google XML Sitemaps, WordPress Database Backup.
I am moving from my current host as I am not satisfied. Will a decent shared hosting fit my needs? Would I be better off with a VPS?
Anyone run a similar situation with shared hosting care to share their experience? How many visitors a day to your wordpress sites and which host?
Anything else you can think of, please let me know.

For now with good wordpress cacher you can be on shared box and once you goo over 1000 visitors daily move to VPS or dedicated, IMO.

Hi!
Based in what you said a shared host should be enough, however, are you using any auto-update on Wordpress? how many wordpress blogs have you running?

Not true, we host WP sites getting 20.000 per day without any problem, while some others getting less than 1000 per day are problematics (wazup addon, shoutbox, too many posts per page, auto update of comments, etc)

No auto update, and there may end up being around 3 wordpress sites that get any decent amount of traffic. A decent portion of the traffic will also be aimed at static sites.

I have a wordpress blog that gets over 3000 visits/day and over 9000 pageviews/day and only uses about 250 megs of space and 15GB bandwidth/month. I have another one that gets about the same visits/day, less pageviews though, and uses 50 megs of space and 12GB bandwidth/month - CPU/RAM usage is not an issue either. Thus, it looks like you won't be needing anything more than shared hosting for a quite a while. Hope this helps put things in perspective.

You should be fine on shared hosting. How much space and transfer do you need?

Minimal on both. There are no large files hosted or anything similar. It is basically static sites and very lightweight wordpress. The wordpress sites will probably grow to several thousand posts, and each static site will never get too big.
Wordpress is basically being used as a minimalist CMS. The community aspect of blogging has been removed completely (no comments, pingbacks, etc).

basic shared hosting solutions should be good for you, however if you look to add multiple sites, then you should try VPS.
but based on your current stats Shared hosting should be sufficient for your needs.

Yep! But you should probably avoid the "unlimited" space/bandwidth hosts just to be on the safe side. They will suspend you a lot more easily than hosts that don't oversell - oversellers are essentially forced to have greater constraints on usage per user since they pack so many users on a server.

"Unlimited" or not, $10 will buy, on average, $10 worth of computing resources.
