apachetop install help

Hi,
I have installed apachetop but it just wont start because fam connection refused.
fam also wont start for some reason as shown below
Code:
#apachetop -f /var/log/httpd/access_log
cannot connect to fam: Connection refused
# fam
Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
fam[22267]: can't register with portmapper.
Can someone please explain what this error means?

Is the portmapper running?
You can test this by going "rpcinfo -p", andthat should give you a list of services which have registered with the portmapper.
If it's not try to start using /etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap start

Hi,
i'm not sure why your version of apachetop requires portmapper to be on.
The one i've tested on CentOS 4.6 Final (via Dagg's rpms) requires no other than
libfam to be installed.
rpm -q apachetop --requires
libc.so.6
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3)
libfam.so.0
libgcc_s.so.1
libgcc_s.so.1(GCC_3.0)
libm.so.6
libncurses.so.5
libreadline.so.4
libstdc++.so.6
libstdc++.so.6(CXXABI_1.3)
libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4)
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1
I'd say, try to switch to a version which does not require you to start daemons
you don't need to be on.

Hi albunix,
portmapper is to run fam and fam is to run apachetop.
I am running CentOS 3.4 which apachetop was not included hence I had to compile apachetop myself.
Thanks for your reply.

techwide,
this does not make sense to me. Perhaps there's significat changes between 3.4 and 4.6 which i've tested apachetop (on the Linux side, as generally i've run it under FreeBSD)
As I stated, the Dag's rpm http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/ requires just libfam which gamin-devel usually offers.
All I'm saying is that perhaps, the 'fam' rpm/program you've got installed is redundant, as just libfam would be sufficient for apachetop installation in which case you can turn off portmapper.
Thanks.

Hi albunix,
As I stated, I've freshly compiled the source code to build apachetop binary. Perhaps this source is different to the Dag's RPM.
Never mind, it's all running ok.
Thanks for your comment.
