Normally I'd go and look in the shared hosting forum but I'm looking for a host that's quite big, one that won't shut down when I least expect and they're reliable. I'm also looking for a host that doesn't pack their servers full of customers, I don't mind overselling, but I want to be able to use *some* resources.
I have a couple of websites, most are pretty light bandwidth and space wise, maybe 10mb space and 100mb bandwidth a month, but I have a cronjob that runs once every minute, which is where my resources issue comes in. This probably isn't much server load, it's a simple php script that collects data from an external source, but it has to be updated every minute. I also have another site that updates once an hour via cron, that script gathers information from multiple locations (over 700) and then saves them to a database, the script takes 4 mins to run.
I need a host that can handle cron jobs being run often, mysql database usage that isn't a tiny amount, but enough to be too heavy for massive oversellers, like site5.
I currently have a dedicated server, but I can't see the point in spending $20 a month on cPanel and then $50 on top for my low end dedicated just for a couple of personal sites. I could always go with a vps, but again, anything that can run cPanel + cPanel license will be in the $40-$50 range.
I would also want to be with a semi large company, I dislike little hosts that have a burstnet server and don't have a clue what they're doing. Hawkhost look good, but I'd like recommendations as well, before I dive in My budget for the purpose of this isn't limited and my requirements aren't very high, 1gb space and 10gb bandwidth would be perfectly ample, reliabilty and ability to handle cron jobs is my deciding factor.
Can anybody recommend good hosts that offer what I'm after, or am I asking too much of shared hosting?

Asking too much? Definitely not. If you're not absolutely set on cPanel, I'd easily recommend MediaLayer (http://medialayer.com).

I've got a couple of things I've built and plan on building that require cPanel and as cPanel is so widely used I'd prefer to stick with it, however, if I can't find a solution that fits my needs for a reasonable price I'll take a look at medialayer
Not sure what's your budget at the end however, if you look to what you really need (instead than to a huge package) you should fit your needs with $10.
Ideally $10, but as I said I'm spending $70 right now a month when I could easily run off shared, so yeah, $10 would be perfect
I just checked out your site and your packages and set up looks great, if you were (theoretically of course ) allowed to find customers at WHT, would you be able to fulfil my apparent needs? (Theoretically, definatley ;D).

If you have dedicated server, why don't you run your cron job on it?
If you don't want to pay for Cpanel, check this Free alternative to Cpanel http://www.vhcs.net/new/

I am, but as I'm only using my dedicated for a few sites now and paying out $70 a month doesn't seem a good idea, it seems silly to waste money. I want to switch from my dedicated to a shared environment

Can you elaborate on how your website requires cPanel as your hosting control panel? DirectAdmin (which is what MediaLayer is using), is much better than cPanel. It's faster, more reliable, and very easy to familiarize yourself with.
MediaLayer is a great company and will also transfer your websites from your old host to them free of charge.
I could manage to switch my site over myself In regards to cPanel; the site utilizes the cPanel API and now I'm rather familiar with it, I'd rather stick with it than switch to a brand new environment. Also, I always want to keep my options open to switching, changing things based on the host I'm with kinda puts me off, if I start developing more things directed towards a lesser used platform, if I have to switch back to cPanel I'll be rather annoyed and lose time.
Is there any super cheap hosts that use Direct Admin so I can set up a cheap account for a few $ for a few weeks and familiarize myself with it? Unless they have some sort of functional demo?
Thanks

I recommend DownTownHost or HawkHost. Both great webhosts.

That might be asking too much of a shared environment. I'm pretty sure you can find a VPS for $15 + $15 = $30 for cPanel out there.

Looks like medialayer are out;
They limit to 3 domains on the lowest package and 12 on the highest, I've got upwards of 30. They also do not allow under 18's of which I am...
Any other medialayer esque hosts?

i'm actually in a similar boat looking for a reliable host and i was looking at vectorlevel and reliablesite. someone also suggested medialayer in my topic but they are out of my budget. maybe the 2 i was looking at are suitable for you
Vectorlevel! I was looking at their site a few weeks back and totally forgot about them. I have my heart set on directadmin now and they offer it! I've checked out their uptime and the like and they look brilliant, I also happen to know Orien is a great guy ;D
That's settled then, Vectorlevel it is, even though they're not a "massive" company as far as I can see; their site is professional looking and they seem to know what they're talking about.
Thanks for reminding me
In fact; if you do go with them, PM me the domain you sign up with and I'll select you as my referrer

How big is "big" by your definition?
A 4-minute PHP script? I doubt you'll get that from a shared environment!

I went with downtownhost in the end and they've been superb. My script runs perfectly without a hitch.
