Getting tired of hosting companies that boast 24/7 support to find that they really mean 9 to 5 and maybe if they check thier messages throughout the night something may get fixed if they feel like it.
Urgent tickets like my server is unreachable or site is down I expect at least a semi quick response from the host. I don't expect 2 second replies but at least within the hour replys.
I understand issues like I messed up my coding is not urgent support issues. But when a server is being overloaded and not by my site but it takes my site down for hours at a time is unacceptable.
Please reffer me to true 24/7 hosts.
I need a new home.
Hostpapa is definetly not doing it for me.

Actually 24/7 is nothing special and most hosting provider should provide it. One hour of response seems reasonable.
Hostpapa seems to be offering unlimited space and bandwidth and I am not surprise if their server is overloaded. Do you really need unlimited space and bandwidth? This is normally the main reason for your issues.

The only solution is to try their support at random intervals IMO. Other wise almost all the hosts offers 24/7 as you said. I think you are referring to the technical support. Sales support is not 24/7 for most of the companies. But so many hosts provides 24/7 technical support. Choose some good host by an intense research and get direct comments on them. Check whether they have money back guarantee and test their support as much as you can. If you are satisfied continue other wise get your money back and leave.

Many host offer true 24/7 Support. Best thing is to confirm it, by visiting their livechat or calling them on the phone, at different times and days.

What are your needs on space and bandwidth? what's your budget?
I strongly suggest you to avoid those too good to be true companies where you get tons of space/bandwidth for less than $10 per month. You'll pay it at the end on reliability.

I agree with this. But if you're paying next to nothing a month for service I frankly wouldn't expect a prompt reply for non-systemic issues. Urgent issues should be handled on the spot night or day whether you're paying $0.99 or $99. When searching for a new host, send a couple of emails outside of business hours to gauge for their level of support.
Good luck with your quest.
Best

The two hosts that I've found particularly responsive are dreamhost (shared hosting) and slhost (dedicated hosting). I've received replies (and solutions!) within an hour of raising a ticket.

Go to a prospective host's page and try the live chat button--talk to them. If they have coherent people available at 3 am, then you'll know there is someone to talk to immediately when something goes wrong. Look for the presence of support as well as sales.
This has always worked out well for me when I had trouble. (But when you do have a problem, if the person you chat with is unable to handle it, be sure to have it escalated.)

I wouldn't base whether they actually provide good 24/7 support upon whether or not they have live chat available at 3am. More often than not the individuals on live chat only do sales and the occasional very minor support. Generally anything that you really need help with you would need to put in a support ticket, or the person on the live chat would put in the ticket for you.
Also, others have stated to call them at odd hours - I would only do this if they say they offer 24/7 phone support. There are quite a few web hosts that offer 24/7 support ticket/email support but only have normal business hour phone support.
Best of luck.

I use Dreamhost.com for all of my domains and their support is actually pretty awesome. You can choose to use the text support, or for an additional charge you can contact them via telephone. I've only used the text support because they usually respond pretty quickly.

What type of support does matter and how they resolve your issue. Anyone with funds now a days can provide 24 / 7 support?

Many hosts offer 24/7 support. But take it a step further and call them to confirm. do they offer live chat, email and phone support?
is the support directly from the host on off hours or call service?
