    Please look at my situation

    I have a 10U space with a 10mbps connection and 2 IP addresses ,let say 123.11.11.1 and 123.11.11.2
I currently put one server in it and set the server with 2IP addresses.

Recently, I want to put one more server in it. Assume I have 2 lan cards on the first server. I want to config the first server to 123.11.11.1 and the new server to 123.11.11.2.

Then how to set the first server as a router to relay all packet to 123.11.11.2 to the new server ?

    iptables ??
    I am using RH7.3.
    Thx a lot !!

What does freebsd have to do with anything? Might as well not waist bandwidth for this forum.

Actually - freebsd is more respected as a software router.

    kktsang,

I believe you can use NAT to do this in IPTABLES

    Maybe this could help you:

    * You too..

Not only that, it's easier to setup for what he's trying to do. And how am I wasting bandwidth? You surely didn't post a solution..

    kksang,

I know some people who run massive amounts of redhat servers in router and other multi-purpose situations. If you contact me off of the forum, I'd be more than happy to put you in touch with them and help you myself.

    Thanks.

    mlovick,
Thx you, I have read the webpage. But it seems not so helpful to me.

It'd be better to buy a rackmount switch just for your 10U space. That way, there won't be the overhead of a firewall. If you're being DoSed or need to block a certain IP, most *nixes have tools that will help you with that. You could also turn off switch ports from the switch's Web based interface.

In short, a dedicated firewall is overkill for most sites.

I plan to buy a small switch for my webhosting.
I am not so familiar with networkings.
What things I need to pay attention when buy a switch and set it up ?
Any webpages that teach setup switch in general?

    Thx a lot !!

Without commenting on whether a switch will help you do what you want to do, but only on your questions:

Make sure if you buy a switch that you buy a managed switch as otherwise you wn't be able to control anything you think you can.

Also, a managed switch will require a dedicated IP just for the switch.

I've not run across any web sites that deal with switch management in general, as all managed switches have their own unique interfaces. But, you should get some help from the manual / on-line help for the specific switch you buy.

There are many good ones - I use Cisco switches but that's purely a personal preference. Managed switches are expensive too - more so than unmanaged ones. You can turn off a switch port on a managed switch if that's what you want to do, but you can't route or firewall with a switch if THAT'S what you want to do. You can get routers with hubs / switch ports built in if you need to do both.

I only have small budget. I would like to have an unmanaged one.
I want to ask if an unmanged one need a dedicated IP or not.

Plug the second server into the "other NIC" (the one that doesn't have an IP address assigned) on the first server.

    Then, do proxy-arp/bridging.

Oh, I shouldn't do this but I'm not ready to buy another just yet. So I'll let you in on a little secret... a low priced MANAGED switch. On ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2053698259

It's a planex 24 port rack-mount managed switch with 2 slots for giabit uplinks. Does trunking, and vlans. Does not do partial rate throttling - no 1mbps limiting. The docs come on a CD - in Japanese. Has http, telnet, and rs-232 management in ENGLISH. Bought mine for about $100 from the same guy. Hopefully y'all will have forgotten about him by the time I but next one - the guy is nice, and has more.

If you buy one, login is admin with no password... You should be able to figure it out from there. If you buy one from him, tell him webpro2 sent ya.
