Just setting up my VPS from WiredTree. When it asks for hostname it gives an example of host.myserver.com. If I input something like host.domain.com do I have to be the owner of domain.com?

No you dont have to be the owner though it is best to be. The hostname has to be a fully working domain name example: yourserver.yourdomainname.com
