Peer1 data center in San Jose

A client had asked me about Peer1 in San Jose (Market Post Tower) for colocation. I do not have any first hand experience with Peer1 so decided to post here.

Anybody care to share any comments or experiences. Do they have good redundancy for power and cooling ?

Thanks In Advance for your time.

Not sure about Peer1 SJC but Peer1 NYC was not bad. Network and Support are top notch. I never called at night but during day time, anything from VLANs to rDNS records were immediately taken care of over the phone, no tickets or emails.

I felt cooling was sufficient only in the aisles where the CRAC was blowing cold air directly into. Other "cold" aisles were actually warm, but bearable.

Racks are too narrow, they fit all types of long and wide chassis, example Dell PE1950, but you have to jiggle a bit at the rack ears to fit it. They could have made the cabinets a bit wider.

If you are planning to go with anything LESS than a 1/2 rack, the 20amp circuit is shared between 2 quarter racks. So a lot of times the 1/4 rack guy above me use my power allocation, which was very annoying to deal with.

I never experienced a network or power outage in their facility and they notify you well in advance about regular maintenance. Thats a another positive thing, they regularly maintain and service their equipments, which most datacenters ignore to do.

Overall we were happy. The only reason we had to move out of there is because of the commute into NYC.

Now mind you, all this Peer1 NYC, not sure what SJC is like, but I'm almost certain its similar.

I can't vouch for their physical colo facilities, but when I was in MPT and used primarily peer1, the few times we needed to contact them they were very helpful and responsive.

One weird quirk though, one time their main router for SJC took a dump, and they blamed it on me. They said I was pushing x amount of pps, even though I was running like a cisco 2948G-L3 and there was no way it would be able to out-muscle what they had as the core for the city. Kinda dumb if you ask me but...its trivial. either way.

Last time I got a quote from them for space / bandwidth direct it was a pretty good deal too imo.

PEER1's LA facility is pretty decent. No problems in the almost two years we've been there. I believe we had one incident of high latency/packet loss that time that lasted an hour -- not an issue for web traffic, but it did affect our VoIP service. Still, all in all, everything is top notch. No power or cooling issues at all (even during/after the earthquake -- wasn't a big one). Scheduled service non-impacting maintenance is regular on UPS/cooling/PDU.

The data center has been very tidy every time I've been there, crash carts present and functional, 24x7 security and card access. During the day, it's easy enough to find someone to get help. Support (phone and tickets) is quick and effective for additional IPs, rDNS delegation, troubleshooting. No problems what so ever with billing.
