Advantage Debian 64 versus regular Debian?

Hello,

I just ordered a server which has that setup:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core
8MB RAM
2x750GB RAID 1 HD

Now I wanna run it with DirectAdmin, but obviously DirectAdmin doesn´t support the Debian 64 which is installed but only 32 bit Debian.

Now I wonder wether I could setup a Debian 32 as well on that system and if yes, wether it would give me a deficit in Performance?

Or would you rather go with CentOS 64 which Directadmin supports?

thx for reading

Yes you could but I'd go for CentOS 64 bit every time.

Assuming that you meant 8GB of RAM, 32 bits will not access that RAM as efficiently as 64 bits.

In my mind control panels shouldn't dictate the choice of a better O/S. Go with 64 bits and learn to manage your server the old fashioned way - with vi!

about learning managing my server the old way... yep I am but until I can I need a CP...and yes I meant 8GB....

concerning CentOS... obviously my provider doesn´t support that, while I thought it would...

my provider just told me that the 32 bit debian could access the RAM since they would use a "PAE Kernel" which would be able to access the whole RAM efficiently... does a 32 bit debian with PAE Kernel still have a downside to 64 bit concerning RAM usage?

dotdoms,

You can safely install 32-bit system on a 64-bit machine. The deficit in performance will be minimal.

I would go with CentOS, but that's mostly because I am used to it

32-bit means that the maximum address that the system can access is 4294967295, which is 4 GB. The OS usually reserves 1 GB of the virtual space, so that leaves 3 GB of accessable physical memory for your program.

64-bit OS and hardware (most modern amd or intel processors have 64-bit support) don't have that issue and can access all your installed memory.

The "PAE" trick comes with a performance penalty.

There's really no reason to use a 32-bit OS if you have 8 GB of RAM.

I would go with 64 bit. The 32 bit doesn't recognize anything more than 4GB of ram. Since you have 8GB.

All the best,
