Thumbs up Managed or Unmanaged.

Hey guys.

Ok, one quick question. Whats does the data center do differently with managed servers compared to un-managed?

We talking about a dedicated server here.

Mike

With unmanaged, the provider won't touch the server unless one of its hardware components fail or the server is down. And you have to call to let them know it's down. They usually charge you for anything involving logging into the server whether it's via the console, RDP, or even out of band.

On the other hand, a managed server gets the TLC it needs such as software updates, script error fixes, software installation, custom scripts, security hardening, proactive monitoring, etc. Although there are several levels of managed service, the basic ones only take care of software upgrades.

Best

Mostly you also get a faster response time from the company that manages your server upon a normal "unmanaged" server. I'm not saying it's the case with every company, but on most of them it is the case.

datacenter is datacenter and there are can be several web hosting (dedicated server) providers there.
I believe that you wanted to ask about providers. As rule if provider offer managed solutions it offers unmanaged as well. The difference explained greatly here by UNIXy
Good luck

What is the Difference Between a Managed and UnManaged Dedicated Server?

Most dedicated servers come with two types of accounts, either managed or unmanaged. However, due to the technical problems, some hosts do not offer a managed dedicated server plan. And a dedicated server that is managed by the host will always come with a higher price tag.

In simple terms, an unmanaged dedicated server means you are responsible for every aspect of maintaining the server, from installing upgrades and patches and ensuring server uptime.

A managed dedicated server, however, means that the host will ensure all the technicalities of keeping servers up-to-date and running smoothly are done. If the server goes down, the hosting company will get it back online for you.

If you are technically savvy with servers, an unmanaged server is likely the right choice. But if you are lacking in technical skills required for the server, but still need the unlimited aspects available with having your site (or sites) on their own dedicated server, a managed server is the right choice.

Many hosts will allow you to later switch from a managed plan to an unmanaged plan as you aquire the neccessary skills. Likewise, some will allow you to switch from unmanaged to managed if you find you have gotten in over your head on the server upkeep, maintenance and technical requirements to keep it running smoothly.

With both a managed and unmanaged dedicated server, you are simply renting the server from the hosting company, you have not bought it outright.

I think the Web Hosting Wiki on this forum is also quite useful for explaining things like this.

Managed Hosting requires any provider to work client-side.

Depends greatly on the provider. Some "managed" is simply anything that can be done in cpanel is all that the provider will touch. Others will go out of their way to help you with scripts, backups, firewalls etc. Before you order besure you find out what exactly is covered.

Every company was a different meaning for "managed". Unmanaged is simple and means that all they handle is provide the network and the server. I would go with managed to save you the troubles and to focus more on your hosting business. It ususally means they take care of the updates and the security.

All the best,
