DNS service?

Right now I've got some users with their own domains. If I ever want to switch hosts, they'll have to switch their DNS around themselves.

I'd prefer to pay for a host-independent DNS so they'll never need to touch their DNS again. Is such a thing available?

Thanks!

I should also mention that this would also help if there was an extended outage and I needed to switch hosts fast.

Your best bet would to have your own custom name servers. Example: ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. This can be setup at your registrar. All your customers domain names should point to this custom Name Server.

Then once you are ready to change servers set your custom name servers to point to your new server. Your customer's DNS will start to resolve to the new server within 24 to 48 hours.

This is why you want to run your own nameservers and not rely on a third party.

Or you could use a service that provides only DNS service, EasyDNS comes to mind. It's more work overall to manage the DNS records when you need to change something but it can be worth it in the end.

Or you could do what others have said and use private nameservers at your registrar, that would work too but not be as powerful as the EasyDNS option.

Best of luck.

Most DNS hosting services can provide what you are looking for in terms of hosted DNS. As stated, you could also host your own DNS servers, but for what DNS is, that can sometimes be cost prohibitive.

I have previous experience with a service called editDNS. www.editdns.net is the link there.

I've used EasyDNS in the past, prior to using our own servers, and I must say that I was more than happy with the service.

EditDNS looks really nice. You can handle multiple domains in one account, right?

I'm pretty sure that you will still have to do some sort of modification when you switch your hosting providers. How could the service possible know where/when you moved your website to another server?

I think no matter what you do at some point you will have to change name servers or DNS records.

Yes, I believe you can have up to 10 domains on the free account?

Great if you just have a company domain and a few others you need to host. I haven't had a second of down time with them all the time Ive used the service.

nettica.com might be in your price range.

To be clear, the advantage is that there is no delay for name server glue propogation.

As for your customers, the delays during a planned move can be minimised by shortening the ttl at an appropriate time prior the the scheduled move. In an emergency, at least you don't have to wait for name server propogation.
