What can I do to improve bandwidth / uplink speed of server?
Hi,
As per topic, what is the best method to do to the hardware to improve bandwidth / uplink speed of server?
I have a production server that is used for regular file serving.
P4 3.0Ghz
4GB RAM
500GB + 160GB + 160GB hard disk
2Mbps Dedicated + 10Mbps shared.
However, the most I can pulled through the whole server is always between 1.5Mbps - 3Mbps, anyway to pull the speed up to around 10Mbps should there be availability of bandwidth for me to burst?
For any informations, the hard disk is SATA 2.

Your upstream might be congested. What's the highest load when your site is the busiest?

When I tested the load with my home internet of 3Mbps, the speed is around 350KB/s on my 3Mbps Singnet BB.
However, daily load of 10 - 30 users constantly download, the speeds drop down to pathetic of 30 - 50KB/s. Wonder how do I increase this speed.

This has nothing to do with hardware (unless you have failing disk which will affect network performance).
Request a MRTG from your upstream on your port as I strongly believe it is the upstream congestion.

You have a 2Mbit connection, and the rest up to 10Mbit is probably bandwidth not in use by other 2Mbit customers. In other words: Buy 10Mbit dedicated if you need more speed..

Like others have said, your network might be congested and you should have your datacenter check on that. The most you could do is just upgrade to a shared 100mbit port so that you will be able to peak over 10mbit and sometimes burst to 100mbit during certain periods of time. I believe if you just upgrade the port speed not the bandwidth amount, it shouldn't be too expensive, especially if it's a shared port.
