What host to choose?

I've been reading many hours on forums etc and found that from "Unlimited and cheap" hosts: HostGator > Lunarpages > HostMonster & BlueHost > Dreamhost. Other than that, I've really only looked for servage.net and some people seems to have problems with it.

So most important features for me:

- Price. No more than 10$/month (one domain and whois security must be included) and no additional costs.
- Uptime.
- Transfer speeds (at least 400kb/s, 500kb/s as minimum constant is good enough).
- Unlimited domains can be added (so I can host my friends small sites as well).
- 200-100Gb disk space is enough.
- At least 1Tb/month bandwidth.
- Host don't shut down my sites and stuff if there's photoshopped versions of images I don't originally have rights to. For Example must be host that asks to remove them, not shutting down my sites and ending my contract.

I live in Scandinavia if that information matters (should I use European or North American host?).

Just giving you a heads up, what you're going to end up with is a heavily oversold server that won't preform.

May I ask, why do you need 200gb of disk space? I ran off of a 2gb service * for years * without a problem, and was able to host a few of my friends sites as well.

If your looking for a highly oversold host that comes with a free domain I can guarantee that you won't receive the quality hosting that you are looking for. Will you really be needing that much diskspace and bandwidth? If you REALLY need that much, then I would start looking towards a dedicated server.

Your asking for 1TB of BW, do you realize how big 1TB of bandwidth is(I am not trying to say anything about your intelligence, just some people don't realize how big 1 TB is).

1TB of bandwidth, is a TON of a shared hosting site... and your not even going to find it for $10 a month with BIG companies(Legit ones). What you should be aiming for is... like a VPS/Dedicated server.

Edit: You can find them for under $10, just you'll be suspended the moment you hit a couple gigs of bandwidth p/day

If I remember correctly, 1&1 company in line with the requirements of your host, you can visit the official Website. But there are some bad evaluation in forums, you should seriously consider. Good luck.

For what you are seeking to pay, the specifications aren't plausible.

You may have been introduced to a world of 'overselling', where the host makes it sound like you can pay a small fee and receive large benefits, but in the end, will face the harsh reality of suspended web pages or deleted accounts.

May I ask what you plan to host that require such a large quantity of web space and bandwidth? If you have a rough estimate, it's easier to go off that and build up, instead of sit at the top of the skyscraper and fall to your death

With your budget and your needs, you're only looking for troubles, I suggest you to raise your budget (A lot!) or lower your needs (a lot too), you can't find a reliable host offering what you want for such a low budget.

Well, I get about 2500 visitors for my site every month and everyone downloads around 100mb. I think that takes out all normal hosting services since at least the local once here only offer around that in their biggest hosting plans. But what my friends need combined is maybe 10gb/month..

I thought about the disk space and 10gb should be enough for me and my friends :p

Does that help?

Other question I have: If my friend buys his own domain and wants to use my host, can he upload and update his site with his own? I don't want to give Control Panel access to anyone else, so if there's some way for them to upload and delete files via ftp or something?

another question: If I have three domains on my host, for example domain1.com, domain2.com and domain3.com, how are their folders named? I'm pretty noob with the sites and I have only had one site in one host before and it needed to have in "public_html" folder.. I don't want to use same folder with everyone :p

So I've searched more and these are my options now:

HostaGator 7,95$/month
GoDaddy 6,99$/month
Servage 8,67$/month

What has the best uptime and at least 500kb/s download speed from the server?

Out of the 3 Host Gator I think is the best. Go Daddy's servers are on the sluggish side since the site design. You may want to check out Eleven2 as an option. But remember, ALL host will limit you some how.

All the best,

Yes I know they will limit, but I only need about 10Gb of space and minimun of 250Gb transfer/month.

For 10GB of space and minimum 250GB transfer, I believe you should up your budget to about $15 for a RELIABLE host. ( I am talking about taking up yearly plans with these hosts. If you want to pay it monthly, be prepared to spend about $25 per mth).

Now I believe you have seen hosts mentioning umlimited bandwidth and 1Tb of bandwidth and so on.

If you check around this forum past threads, I believe you can see many threads where these hosts are not recommended at all for various reasons. Figure out if you really need that kind of bandwidth and space. If yes, well just pay that extra bucks and save yourself all the trouble that might arise with a bad host.

Can you post some files from both Servage and HostGator sites so I can test my download speed from their servers. I'm not asking from the hosts themself because they will give files that are always in the best servers :p

edit: I found 5mb file from this forum that is in Servage and I got speeds from 300kb/s to 610kb/s when I downloaded it like 5 times (610kb/s is my full speed). Now I only need to find HostGator hosted file.

I'm going to take a nap now. Post some sites hosted on HostGator in the meanwhile so I can test their speeds

edit: found HostGator 20mb file from their support site and download speed was pretty bad, 290kb/s. I think I'll go with Servage as they have 2x better speed (not big surprise as I live in Europe, but people were saying HostGator has good speads so I was hoping little better).

Pretty funny to get updates on your nap times. Anyway try this site www.hostgatorreview.org/ . It is hosted by hostgator shared plan and also acts as a review for hostgator. Hope the site's information is of use to you. I am sure it is affiliated so up to you to gauge if the information is valuabe or not.
