Website Builders... do customers actually want/use them?
Hi all,
Just wondering, do customers actually want or use website builders? and is there still room in the market for another website builder service to compete with the others?

I think there are still many that need website builder as not 100% of the hosting clients understand about complicated programming languages and for newbies, most of them will still rely on website builder.
There will always be a room in the market for another website builder as long as it is user friendly, easy, technologically advanced, and affordable too

Thanks for the reply... i guess the next question is, is there any real money in website builders unless you can get alot of customers?

the current website builders are really really poor...every single one of them.
If you have a good approach to this I'd love to discuss it with you.

Wanting and using are two totally separate things.
Do customers want a website builder? They think they do, yes. They think it sounds great, they think it's a great idea and a good thing to have.
In reality, do customers use a website builder? In my experience, less than 1% of customers actually use it .... UNLESS the hosting company specifically markets to customers who use website builders (being that it is a niche market), in which case those companies are going to have a much higher proportion of customers who actually use it.
But for "average" hosts where it is a tool that is available, but not specially marketed? - not so much.

I would agree with Ditlev here. The current bits of software out there that claim to be 'website builders' are really bad.
Most of the stuff out there is proprietary and just can't do what needs to be done.
Do most 'customers' use them? Meh, I'd say 50/50 . There's a LOT of people who don't undersand HTML and don't want to learn to 'program' just to get their website up and running
Do technical 'customers' use them? Probably not so much. Any professional that DOES use this type of software should find a different profession.

There will be real income as long as you provide a good and user friendly site builder for the users. Moreover, you can also cooperate with hosts that would like use your website builder for their clients

Thanks for the replies guys. I am currently developing a website builder which will be released by the end of the year... these comments have definitely giving be some encouragement to continue on as it can sometimes become quite a daunting task to get things right the first time.

It's a niche market. If you target new website owners (who don't have a website, etc) then they will 'want' a sitebuilder.
Or, if you build your own template around the sitebuilder and then sell it as a CMS this can also work decently.
But for the average website owner who signs up for hosting... there is no need for a builder since they already have a website.

Thats true... thanks for the advice.
I've been looking around at the other builders out there and it seems that heaps of them are actually pretty dated!! though at the same time a handful have a very strong presence in the market and their product seems very strong.
I still have alot of other feature to implement. What do you think is best... should i launch with what i have (which is still quite complete) or should i finish everything off? (and create a more complete product?)

It depends, do you think your product is ready for the world?
If yes, then why not? Do do it.
But if you're not totally confident, you could be launching a product that may not fit the consumers needs, and then they will loose faith in your product, therefore you would have to release your completed product and regain those peoples faith and trust.
Hope I helped

Actually, SohoLaunch is pretty damn good for what it is. I'm pretty impressed by some of the sites I have been able to make with it (I test everything firsthand before releasing it to customers). We just made a bunch of really good templates to add to it, and wow.

Yes, there will always be a need for a web site builder as not every one has the knowledge or care to learn to build a web site or wants to spend the money on hiring someone to create one for them.
Good luck on your project.

I have RV sitebuilder and am not impressed at all. If you want to make a good one of these think NetObjects. THAT is an easy to use web site program. Drag and drop pages, etc.
I would love to see a good one of these for clients to get their feet wet. I tried to show a client how to use RV Sitebuilder and wanted to shoot myself. Granted, I have not spent much time with it like I have with Dreamweaver or Netobjects. NetObjects is a little know program which has allowed me to get sites up really quickly when that was what was needed. They are on version 12 or like that.
