Should I get DVR?
Right now I have DirecTV satellite and have always been curious about having a DVR. I'm not a big TV watcher but at night when I watch TV I will have missed my favorite shows that played earlier in the day.
I can get DVR with DirecTV for a one time fee of only $45 bucks (no other fees). Should I get one or is it a waste of money... who here uses DVR? Come on... I know there are at least a few couch potatoes here who knows this stuff!

My family has DVR and I love it. I record all my favorite shows, and it's great to have the option to pause, fast forward, or rewind what you're watching. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

Or if you (like most of us) have a bunch of spare puter parts lying around, just make one with MythTV. The only thing you'll prob have to buy is the capture card. Much more geeky fun.

Go for it Frosty. We got ours about 2 years ago and I can't imagine going a day without it. We're always out and about, so it's great to tell it to record every episode of X show that comes on...It's just awesome.

Thanks for the responses, so it seems I am missing out if I don't get it
Wait, do you guys have DVR or Tivo though? From what I read on google Tivo is much better? But that would cost me at least $150 bucks... too expesnive.
DVR with DirectV is one time fee of only $45 bucks.

I've got a regular DVR with Dish network. I had Tivo a few years back, and you're not missing anything by getting a regular DVR.

I love technology. My wife claims to hate it, but she loves the DVR and we don't watch much TV, but having the ability to watch what you want when you want it, skip the commercials and rewind are great! It is like broadband internet access, or DVDs, once you switch from older technology, you will never want to go back.

Ah shucks!
DirecTV told me that if I get their $45 DVR (which they now told me they can give to me for only $20 bucks) that it does NOT support HD so I would not be able to watch ANYTHING at all in HD. No thanks, I'll pass.
In order for me to get their DVR that does support HD they are just as expensive as Tivo and I would have to shell out over $130 dollars.
But now I want one anyway, you guys talked me into it! Since Tivo and DirecTV DVR are same price, not sure which one to get

The ONLY thing Tivo has that regular DVRs don't have is the thumbs up/down feature, and the ability to suggest shows that you might like. To me, it wasn't that useful, and our regular HD DVR works perfectly fine for us. It's kind of like going to a widescreen monitor Once you do it, you will NEVER want to go without it.

Hmmm.... I think I'm going to take the plunge to get DirecTV HD DVR and pay the $130 (at least it's a one time fee) so I guess it will be worth it.
LOL... yes I can relate to the feeling you mentioned as now that I have my widescreen monitor and widescreen TV I can't imagine using that old square thing that used to sit on my desk. And how did I EVER use a mouse without forward/backward buttons for all those years?

I think you will like the DirecTV HD DVR. I'm not sure if it still works this way or not, but when I looked into Tivo working with Dish, you had to put infrared leds in front of the satellite system so the Tivo system could change the satellite channels to record the right shows. The manual even suggested putting aluminum foil over the front of the satellite system. That doesn't sound too high tech for me. Also, you may be able to get a version that allows recording of more than one channel which is nice as well.

A big advantage of DVR is that you can skip ads, allowing you to do other things with the time saved. One of the things I like to do, is say for an hour tv show, I will come 10mins after the show starts (make sure to record it), and then I will just fast forward the commercials. Towards the end, I will have caught up to the broadcast.

We got a DVR in early 2007. I don't know what I would do without it. Just like everyone said, its features are awesome.
