Dedicated Server Vs Virtual Dedicated Server

I am currently using a shared hosting but due to increasing traffic and server load my existing host is not able to provide reliable services and I am planning to upgrade my hosting service.

While I was searching for Dedicated Servers, I learnt about Virtual Dedicated Servers but I am not very sure about their reliability? Are Virtual Dedicated Servers useful? My website current serves over 2500-3000 visitors a day resulting in 30,000 pageviews and I am expecting the traffic to grow by atleast 2 folds in the next few months as I start some PPC campaigns and Email Marketing for my website. Can a Virtual Dedicated Server cater such needs assuming my website to be more of less dynamic website written in php?

Depend on what exactly that Virtual Dedicated Server consists in, since some people tend to throw around names, and it's probably the same as a VPS(Virtual Private Server) it will probably work out for you as long as you get a decent one.

Like cristibighea said; as long you get a decent one (enough memory and resources) you may get away with a VPS. Not that there is a big difference betweeen operating a shared-hosting and a VPS or Dedicated server, you will need to know something about server management; unless you get yourself a fully managed dedicated or vps server; with pro-active support. (the ones which promise fully managed servers but only act on your questions are not the ones for someone not familair with server management themselves, but can be great for someone who just needs some extra hands to do the work).

You could also look into semi-dedicated servers which are in about the same region as VPS servers but are fully managed just like a shared environment.

Hope this helps you in exploring all the different options you have.

If you're considering VPS, definitely ask some questions, as your experience hinges on the answers. You'll want to know the maximum accounts per server, server specs, and what exactly is covered by their full management. That's a starting point. Just eliminate any contenders that don't have clear answers to those questions, and revisit the ones who are helpful. Hopefully, in the process, you'll find a good fit with a good host.

I think a VPS with 512 RAM or even one with 256 would work for you. VPS is a simulation of a real server through Os virtualization solution. It work much like a real server... I mean you will not find the difference and it will be even better for you to get VPS. Try to speak to some web hosts that offer VPS hosting and ask them about VPS management services.

If you can afford it, get a cheap dedicated server. You will be doing email marketing. You need total control of your server.

Often companies that offer VPS also offer dedicated servers, so it makes sense to work your way up over time. First you can get a normal VPS, and then you can get a larger plan or even dedicated as needed.

Agreed.

The most important part of the equation is getting full support since the learning curve is steep for either VPS or dedicated.

A virtual dedicated server is just a large VPS. Reliability can be lower than a dedicated if the hardware node is overloaded and/or mismanaged by the host, but it can be higher if handled correctly due to being abstracted from the hardware - if anything goes wrong with the hardaware or it needs upgrading / fixing the host can move you to another node. You will also find it easier to grow with a VPS as they are very easy to upgrade. You can also often burst to the full CPU power of the hardware node if it's not busy, giving you much greater processing power than the equivalently priced dedicated box.
