Question Any cheap 1gbps unmetered providers out there?

Hi,
We host a huge image host that is spread across 3 dual xeon machines on 100mb unmetered machines.
Each machine uses up about 12-15TB a month and we need more.

I've seen some sales lately with 8 core machines on 1gb unmetered ports.
We don't need management but we do need a SLA as we are going to put all of our "eggs" in one "basket".

My question is: can you guys recommend a cheap 1gb unmetered provider?

We will need a 8 core machine with 8gb ram and at least 2x1TB drives and we will use at least 80TB a month of bw (80% out going and 20% in going).

I tried OVH but seems they cap it at 100mbs average which isn't good enough.
Also looked at FDC but seems the prices are 3xtimes more then EU based machines.

I'm ok with EU/US machines as customers are from US and EU.

Any advice or recommendation for a cheap provider?

Thanks!

Depends what your understanding of "cheap" is. FDC is generally considered amongst the cheapest providers you can get in the US. Prices might be a bit smaller in Europe but you're probably looking at shared 1gbps prices which will, most of the time, provide good speeds only around Europe.

Cheap would be around 300-400$ for a machine.
I always wonder if the EU ones have a slow connections to the US or not (not sure if they are back boned).

You want 80TB of data a month for $300-400? With an SLA?

Um. That's $3.75 - $5.00 / TB (not including any additional costs the provider would have).

Try raising your budget.

Also, for anyone doing the calculations --- that's ~250Mbps.

So you're wanting bandwidth for $1.20 - $1.60 / Mbps?

Although I love the idea of you buying dedicated servers, it sounds like you would be better served by simply co-locating some machines inside of a Cogent facility or at a facility where Cogent can do 10Gig. I've heard recently that they go as low as $4/mbps but I cannot imagine anyone going lower than that (if they do they're certainly overselling it by a terrific amount) keep in mind also that 'you get what you pay for' and having 3Gbps of 'iffy' bandwidth is not always as good as having 1Gbps of good bandwidth.

Yeh I realize that.
Thing is even on 3 machines and high traffic the site barely covers the rent costs so I'm being cheap at expenses.

I will look into colo and maybe just stick to adding more 100mbs ones :-(
Wish there was a smarter way (or that amazon e2 would charge less for BW LOL).

Which provider are you using now?

Maybe you should try LeaseWeb? they have 100mbs unmetered for 200Euro/month.

That is the cheapest i have seen for dedicated BW.

well if you're looking for dedicated 100mbps they're around 1k with a server that rounds out to 1.5k.

Most people don't do 1GBps simply because it is unpractical. What you should do is get a 1GBPS and have the company do 95% billing which would probably solve all your problems.

I would think leaseweb's 100mbps unmetered are shared not dedicated. I will check with them but I am 99% sure thats the case as with fdc.

That may work for you though, but there is no way your getting 1gbps unmetered or 80TB for $300, a true dedicated 100mbps unmetered would cost over $1k in the US.

I do think your best bet would be to continue with shared 100mbps unmetered.

That's not true. You can get dedicated unmetered 100mbps for <= $500, 1gbps for $2500, not including server costs.

not sure about this statement - tell me which provider and which data center -- and do not include cogent as all there traffic is peering and has latency - good for a 2nd or 3rd provider, but never as a main provider

Fact is bandwidth doesn't come much cheaper than Cogent's $4/mbit line. Thus the minimum cost to a datacenter for you is likely somewhere around $1000, possibly including power and the server, possibly not, depends. If they're offering it to you for under that, one of two things is happening - you're not getting what you pay for, or they're selling it to you under cost and are only profitable as a company because their other, less-heavy customers make up the difference (and eventually they'll realize what their sales department has done and get rid of you).

Look at EU providers like Ecatel. We use about 20-30TB of bandwidth with ease and their prices are cost effective.

Thanks guys - I'm going to check these options.
ATM we are using some machines at FDC and some at burst.net - all 100mbps shared unmetered (although we can push 4-5x more BW on FDC then at burst from our experiance).
