Server Solution Help!
Hello. I plan on running a small personal blog-like website in which I may host some videos, writings, photography, digital art, tutorials etc. It's really mostly for me and anyone who knows me. Nothing crazy. Also I may host a website for my band. I would host it off of my laptop but it would be stupid to leave a laptop turned on 24/7. Can anybody suggest a small, quiet, power saving, networkable box that I could use to host a website off of? I'm thinking someting small that I would only have to plug peripherals into once in awhile but for the most part could just leave it switched on in the corner of my room. Any solutions?

Before you host anything off your own internet connection, make sure that your ISP allows it (most of them don't). Moreover, you can easily use any of the shared hosting providers ($5-10/mo) for your needs, instead of running your own box. Is there any specific reason why you want to use your own box to host your site?

gigapros is right. You may think it will be cheaper but once you look at the incredibly slow speed + the $$$ you spend to power the box 24/7 and then add in your time to administer/maintain the box (yes, time is money) it ends up being a lot more expensive and a lot less reliable to host from home.
That is unless you have a 100/100 fiber connection to your house, in which case just make sure your provider allows you to host on their connection.
Best of luck.

I would recommend using a shared hosting plan. Then everything is managed for you and it will probably be a lot cheaper in the long run.
Good luck.

You should just use a shared hosting plan. Because if you host it yourself, there may be slow loading times, security problems, and
you have maintain it.

Haha I knew this was going to happen. Does anyone have an answer to my actual question?

Get a unlimited BW connection from the ISP, configure a box with all needed servers, assign the public IP, configure all needed firewall and security installs. When you want to make changes, plug the laptop to the box.

save yourself the hassle get a cheap shared hosting account then someone else can manage this for you and you can focus on the actual sites rather than maintaining a server in your home.
