If you customers are not using much CPU resource then you may run 100+ sites.

yeah 500 is a load.
surely if you need more than 500 you'd be able to upgrade your services to allow for more (needing 500 subdomains would indicate you have built a fair few websites for your customers so you'd be able to afford it at that point)

also if your building the sites you know the kind of load they will be creating. bsic php/html wont take up much at all. if theres lots of database quiries then that will obviously bring down the max number of accounts down

Run as many sub-domains or sub-hosts as you like, however, keep in mind that some providers limit the number of concurrent connections you can have at a single time.

For example, GoDaddy (and their resellers) limit to 50 concurrent connections. This could be 1,000's of unique visitors a day, or millions depending on how your connections are distributed.

Depending on what you are doing with the domains, you can get around these limits by spreading around shared images, JavaScript, and CSS. Just make sure you are producing sites worth creating and keep an eye on your statistics (i.e. look for 503 and other 500 series errors.)

Best,

Justin
