For basic TCPIP stuff and "how the net works 101" head to:

    http://www.ipprimer.com/index.cfm

    BIND stuff:

    http://www.ccs.neu.edu/groups/systems/proj/DNS/bog.html

    BIND to djbdns:

    http://flounder.net/djbdns/bind-to-djbdns.html

    apache:

    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/

    bash scripting:

    http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/

...that is all on the more technical side. There is a business side to webhosting, revenue, margins, etc. He can pick up a high school economics book and breeze through that in a few days.

After html, tell him to learn xhtml/css/php
