Hi,
Need to configure a mail server to send maximum number of emails a day.
Qmail has disappointed me. We have 5 million opt in subscribers. The server will be used for mailings only. If one server is not enough for sending 5 million email in a week then we can go for multiple servers connected in a way that they have a central control but i think quadcore 2.6 with 8 gb ram will do the job.
Need a person who has hands on experience with this type of stuff. Someone has suggested me to install no control panel and go for postfix. what do u think?

Need to configure a mail server to send maximum number of emails a day or limit to a max number of emails a day?
I would suggest a different approach:
Install CPanel & EXIM
Or Use Exim MTA.
Feel free to PM or email us at admin@indyamail.com.
Best Regards,

"Use Exim MTA" not very good for a high performance MTA communication

That might be your feel. WE have had it running for a few companies that send out tons of emails. I dont agree that Exim is bad. IF you look at the fact the CPanel itself has adopted it or other panels often refer to using it (simply the fact that integration is easier than many others)..... - I dont think thats a fair call on Exim.
Maybe your perception.

I've used them all exim, qmail, sendmail, postfix. Cpanel probably went with EXIM because it's easy to configure and has a lot of features. For large mailings you need a high performance MTA. I speak from experience from working with different MTAs and with having process millions of emails.

Postfix without a doubt ! The reason is Postfix version 2.4 and later have no built-in limits on the number of open files.

If your just sending out email only on that server than there is no reason not to simply set it up as a single service MTA server.
Exim is fine and so is qmail, I have used both quite a bit. However, I've had to setup an email system for a previous client who used smtp has a primary service and I set that up as a small cluster of Postfix MTAs, it performed great.
You don't need a control panel at all if your simply using the server to send out email and the amount you indicated shouldn't be any problem for the hardware you specified.
I would recommend a cluster of mta's with lower-end hardware for better reliability instead of a single large server. That way you don't have that single point of failure issue, but that could be worked out later if its within your interest.
I can get you going either way. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. PM me or email: digitalhype @ gmail.com
