Why do .png images show differently in various browsers?

Hey WHT,

I've always wondered why sometimes images saved in png-24 show up differently in different browsers. I've just noticed that sometimes the colors of images will be slightly lighter or darker based on the browser. But the moment you change or save the image as .jpg or something simple the colors are the same.

Any ideas?

Does your PNG have transparent background? If so, IE doesn't support PNG and it fill in the colour background. There's a solution to fixing png for IE support.

Um, that wasn't really my question. Only IE6 doesn't support transparency. And.. I can easily fix that. I'm talking about any image in general. I think it has something to do with color profiles.

Yes, PNG image format offers embedded gamma profile features which is recognized by the modern browsers, while the troublesome ones (IEs) fail to take advantage of it.
You can strip the gamma profile data from your images using PNGCrush and PNGOut.

It has something to do with IE 6 & 7 not obeying the gamma metadata.

Download PNGcrush (google it) and type
pngcrush -brute -rem cHRM -rem gAMA -rem iCCP -rem sRGB infile.png outfile.png

This will also attempt to recompress the file while maintaining the same quality.

Nice. I was always wondering why IE7 and Firefox rendered PNGs slightly differently.
