Domain Name Renewal Pricing

Is higher pricing for domain renewal common practice or is Freeparking unusual in charging more?

Freeparking.co.uk website quotes a price of £4.99 p.a for co.uk names. However on logging on to renew an existing co.uk the price I was quoted was nearly double - 2 years at £7.98 per year.

I queried this Freeparking and was told this is the price I would have to pay. I've used and recommended Freeparking (since Jul 2000) and would have stayed with them - but this strikes me as sharp practice.

Does 123-reg charge more on renewal? - their website quotes a price of £2.79 p.a for registering new co.uk domains.

Any recommendations on where I should take my custom for com/co.uk/us.com

Cheers

Scytale

My only .oc.uk is on Moniker and look reasonable prices if you say you are a Namepros member.

Hi Scytale,

Remember that you have to pay for 2 years at a time with .UK, buit certainly £4.99 is epensive per year.... if that was a dollar amount, then thats not bad at all.

Certainly though putting the price up that much for renewal is a sharp practise.

Chris

Hiking the prices once someone is onboard and therefore somewhat of a captive audience (aka shatfing your clients) is something practiced by a number of the "cheapy" domain registration companies and hosts, who sting you to renew or transfer away, or have "interesting" clauses in their T&C's about who owns the domain etc.

As to whether £15.96 for your domain for 2 years is a good price, depends on if you take advantage of any of the "free" services they "give" with every domain
- free in this instance simply means they're not charging separately ...

123-reg don't charge extra for renewals. I've been quite happy with them.

I've had a very good experience with Telivo -- £2.50/yr for .co.uk and they don't charge extra for renewals.

It's worth noting that this means there is zero markup on the wholesale price so they will either increase prices at some point in the future or be hoping to make their money by upselling you.

I registered my first .co.uk I believe almost 2 years ago at that price and it hasnt changed in that time -- their TLD prices arent great so maybe they are making their money there -- or like you said hoping to upsell.

Thanks for the responses everyone, as they don't charge more on renewal I guess I'll either go for 123-reg or telivo.
