Most decent hosts will have some sort of limitation on how many e-mails can be sent for a couple of reasons.

1) Sending large amounts of email in a short amount of time can put a very heavy load on the server and slow down all other services.

2) It's better to limit them, in case a spammer decides to "have some fun" or a script messes up and goes crazy with e-mail.

My suggestion would be to use phpList and throttle your emails to about 400/hour and you'll have your whole list sent out in about 8 hours which is not bad for being on a shared host.

Realistically if you want to send out 3,000 emails any faster than a few hours you'll probably be looking at a VPS or Dedicated or some sort of semi-dedicated (shared server where you pay more but there are less clients on the server).

There are of course exceptions, as I am making a generalization here.

With a VPS you will not have a restriction on the send emails (as long its legal) but if you have a cheap VPS you could notice your forum to go work a lot slower because as said; sending large bulk of emails does cost server resources.

You keep saying that you have a small forum, but sending out 3000 mails in a short time is not that small anymore Why would you not spread the load as MikeDVB suggested?

Dumping 3000 emails into the mail queue in one go is quite a lot - you should find some software that allows you to spread the newsletter sending over a period of time if you want to continue using your shared hosting provider.

I would suggest installing a copy of DadaMail (free) on your shared hosting account, then invite your forum users to subscribe to your newsletter. Do not just dump all your forum members' emails in, that would be spam. But if you invite them, and they double-opt in, then your list is 100% A-OK. (And you know the people on that list are really interested in your site!)

With Dada Mail you can set any size batching. Set it to 6 emails per minute. Yes, six that will send out 360 emails per hour ... and leave you 140 emails/hour left over for ongoing forum notifications, etc. That way you are well under all the limits, but your message makes it out.

Generally when I send out my newsletters, I batch them at 15/minute, and that puts no stress on the server whatsoever ... I like 15/minute because multiple accounts can be sending newsletters simultaneously and the server doesn't struggle with it at all. Both DadaMail and 1-2-All work great.

I know 15/minute is higher than HostGator will allow; I'm just explaining that that is a reasonable rate for a server that is not overloaded.

I too will suggest for a VPS. No reputed shared host will allow you to send that much mails in a row or rather they shouldn't allow it as it will affect other customers too. 3000 is huge number, most will be allowing in a 300 - 500 limit.

So the best way for you will be to go for a VPS.

Hi Amadeu,

Something else to consider is finding a hosting company that specializes in mailing lists. We've worked with Consistant Contact in the past and liked what they offered.

My suggestion as mentioned above already, an e-mail marketing service, such as ConstantContact or get a VPS, set it up specifically for mailing out and maintain the lists proper to avoid getting blacklisted.

Just get VPS account to avoid future limitation of service. You can not continue on shared account. An even you have VPs account you still have to make sure that you have permission from all forum members to send them e-mail.
