1 year contract for IP transit, have you gotten setup fees waived?

I might end up colocating at a datacenter which serves as a POP for cogent, however the setup fee is $1,000 for this (they already have their own fiber in their building).

Have you ever gotten the setup fee waived before or any tips on negotiating these kinds of things. I don't know if its upto the sales guy to make the call or not.

Thats why I am asking

Thanks

Ask what the setup fee is for. They might have to pay the building to run the cross-connect, etc. If they're just charging you a setup fee so they can make an extra $1000, you should be able to get it dropped/significantly lowered.

The building might be a pop but not the particular floor or suite. Which building/floor are you bringing the cogent to?

What do they give you in return of $1000 setup fee?

Just haggle with the cogent reps, they will usually/always drop/wave it.

Some 3rd party datacenter in Anaheim.

If there was a charge to setup my uplink, the datacenter are the ones that would charge me not cogent, isn't that right?

They have a cogent uplink already, but they want $40/mbit for it. I can go direct and get 4 times the bandwidth for the same price directly from cogent. Not to mention free IP's compared to $1/each.

I still don't know what the setup fee from cogent is for, they already have their fiber in the building (entire building is datacenter).

It depends what you're talking about. If they need to run a cross-connect in the building for you, the datacenter might charge for that. If the charge is just to "turn the port on," then that'd be Cogent.

Ask them.

Well, you'd be going direct With Cognet, so technically wouldn't they need a separate line just for you so they know who is using what bandwidth?

The setup fee is going to pay the part of your rep`s vacation this summer. Tell him to waive the setup fee else you`re going with a different carrier.

Prolly not. You'd be surprised how much of the NRC goes to the "house". It either subsidizes the low MRC or goes to pay off ISP (inside plant) costs.

Depending on your overall monthly cost for the service, it can be reduced/lowered in some cased.

My experience with Cogent is that you can almost always get them to wave the install.
You just need to make sure that you are moving into a facility that they are in.
Not just a building that they are in. They need to be in the actual DC you are in. So the cross connect to them doesn't have to pass through any walls or conduit.

If you get anything other than the ability to do business, then it is not called a "setup fee". Nothing is ever included nor should be included in a setup fee other than the privilege granted to consummate a contractual arrangement.

We are working on negotiating a contract with a new carrier right now, and part of the negotiating is about waiving the $1800 "application/setup fee". If you approach it the right way, they will talk to you about getting this waived, especially when they know you have "options".

Cogent have recently gone hard line on setup fees I believe, due to them dropping their MRC by quite a margin in some cases, they don't want to waive setup fees.
