Which CPU is faster ?


Intel Xeon Harpertown E5405

or

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3220 @ 2.40GHz

That is going to depend on your intended workload.

In a blended overall world where we assume your intended applications are "all", then they will be about equal. The X3220 has an edge on straight clockspeed, but the E5405 is 3x the L2 cache, faster FSB, and such.

I would probably go with the E5405 with the extra cache.

How significant is the price difference between the two servers you're looking at, and do you want to be able to expand by adding a second CPU (for total 8 cores)? You would only have that option on the Harpertown.

i will agree with getting more L2 cache which would help out the loading.

Agreed.

Intel Xeon Harpertown E5405 allows for the expansion of a second CPU, and the extra cache is nice.
