* BlueHost's UNLIMITED Plan!

I did some quick live chat sessions with them just to see how far this "unlimited" really goes. Here's what I got:
Quote:
-Maximum of 8 simultaneous IMAP connections
-Maximum of 40 simultaneous PHP connections
-Maximum of 60 simultaneous MySQL connections
-Maximum of 400 simultaneous HTTP connections
-Maximum of 8 simultaneous FTP connections
I just found that kind of funny and thought I'd share it with y'all.

It basically just sums up what y'all have been saying all along:
Quote:
If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

I'm working on digging up the limits on other hosts as well. I'll start a thread with what other companies do once I get the information.

I'm currently talking with IX Web Hosting... and this was one of there responses to me asking the maximum HTTP connections, etc.:
Quote:
The intention of IX Web Hosting is to provide ample resources for customer convenience, so that customers needn't to worry about exceeding limits, but in case your site contains information which is in violation of our TOS agreement, you may be asked to adjust your settings/site to match certain criterions such as remove files abusing our server.

Actually, I'd say unlimited is a bad decision (marketing wise) because there's no way to expand upon it.

You can offer 100tb, and then increase it to 150tb and 200tb etc... But once you hit unlimited ... what is it Unlimited+ or Unlimited++ or Mega Unlimited or Ultra Unlimited?

Offering unlimited is not much different from offering 400~1500gb on a shared plan for $4~12/month anyhow. You cannot use the 400~1500 and you can't use "unlimited" so not much has changed in reality.

Oh well.

Bluehost is famous for making promises they can't deliver and misrepresenting facts.

On the About Us Bluehost web site, "With our high quality redundant systems you can be sure that your data is always available for both you and your customers."

Redundant systems? Data is always available? What a joke!

Once again from the About Us Bluehost page," BlueHost has been providing hosting solutions to thousands of business and personal web sites since 1996."

Domaintools whois shows the domain name bluehost.com was created on 2002-11-15 , hostmonster.com on 1999-06-15 and fastdomain.com on 2002-11-07.

How can Bluehost be in the web hosting business since 1996 when the domain name was only created in 2002? Hummm, seem to be a 6 year discrepancy from Bluehosts claimed start date and the creation of their domain name? Bluehost must have suffered from a case of 6 year amnesia!

Since Bluehost is bold enough to lie about the above issues, why not make such claims as offering unlimited disk space and bandwidth...

The problem with these plans and the reason they get away with it, the average web hosting client are inexperienced and *think* they might need that much space and *think* that their price is extremely good for what they perceive their getting, but they never reach the limits, so are happy. The experienced clients would never use such services because they know that what they offer is impossible and don't even spend a moment's thought on them.

If more experienced customers used them and then filed complaints for misleading advertising and could actually prove that there is NO WAY one could use all the resources being offered without being cut off long before, they may actually have to stop those practices before the government takes over and regulates such things like they do with other advertising.

Er, well prior to that they provided free hosting under an alternate name.

And such is my point.

It was NOT Bluehost but a company under a different name. Such tactics are a blatant misrepresentation of actual facts of how long Bluehost has been in business.

0catch.com is not Bluehost.com.

Nobody can give an unlimited! Bandwidth always limited, even if it is 1000000 TB. When bandwidth is limited, it is not possible to host unlimited number or files. But Unlimited is a very good keyword that can be used to trap a lot of innocent people.

I think BlueHost can include the truth in about page, as they were in a different name. It will make more reputation.

I think it is more like "eat as much as you can for free" personality thing rather than the unlimited
word itself.
