Limiting Amount of Data Transfer on Windows Server

Hi,

I'm writing to ask for help in how to limit the amount of data transfered for a single client in a share hosting scenario using Windows 2003/2008 and NOT using a off-the-shelf control panel.

Within IIS you can limit the number of connections and throttle the transfer rate, but I don't see how to limit the amount of data transferred.

Are the Control Panels monitoring the log files and totaling the amount of data transferred or is there another way to implement data transfer limits?

Thanks in advance for your help!

April

Control panels does monitor the data transfer (which is usually done as a scheduled task once or twice a day) and can send out notification emails when it reaches a certain mark (as decided by the domain hosting package).

Hope this helps!

What are we talking about? HTML, ASP, ASP.Net sites?

I think you could build a HttpModule for asp.net that could keep an eye on the traffic, and then let the same module block all responses when the limit is reached.

I think...

The only real way to do this would have software that reads the log files every few hours and start/stop the site if they exceed the maximum allowed.

An ISAPI module would be overkill.

you can limit amount of data transferred for one domain by limiting "transfer rate" IIS->WebSites->your seb site properties ->Performance tab

for example if you set limit to 1024 kilobytes per sec (or 1MB/s) means that you limit total monthly bandwidth to:

1MB x 60sec x 60min x 24hrs x 30days = 2592000MB per month or approximately 2.6TB/mo

Also you can monitor bandwidth usage via "PERFMON" utility which is installed by default on Windows server 2003

1. run command "PERFMON" from command line.

2. then delete all active counters

3. press button "add counters" and add new counter by selecting:

Performance object - WEB SERVICE
Counter - TOTAL bytes TRANSFERRED
Instance - yourdomain.com

Why limit your client's performance, and potentially risk upsetting them? You could instead charge them for the additional usage (particularly if you have a Control Panel where you can monitor usage). If they're using up a lot of processor / memory usage, then limit back the threads so that when a memory limit is reached (e.g. 150) then the threads are closed. We've done this successfully with several heavy-user clients to balance the server usage fairly.
