Is GOOGLE a Registrar?

I might be confused about this. For some reason I thought they owned NAME.COM . . .

Nope, it is just Name.com having a campaign partnered with Google.

Doesn't Google derive most of its ad revenue from advertisements?

Registrars seem to be in a very low margin business, and if I can extend out my own experiences to others, purchasers do not likely access their registrars' control panel interfaces too often.

There would not be too much ad revenue for Google to make, I would imagine. Strategic partnerships could be good, but Google seems to have that through Name.com on at least some level.

Yes, Google is a registrar (see list below) but they do not register names for others. They use the accreditation to get access to registry data to use for internal business purposes (search engine rankings etc...)

Because they didn't become a registrar until 2005 and their domain registration doesn't expire until 2011.

Techno is right on the button. And no, they don't own Name.com.

Because almost no big company manages there domains themself. They outsource the registering to a company which handles there world wide registrations.

I don't think that managing domains is a big problem for organization like Google.

Notice where Google.com is registered:

Quote:
Domain Name: GOOGLE.COM
Registrar: MARKMONITOR INC.
Then a bit about MarkMonitor:

http://markmonitor.com/solutions

Quote:
Headquartered in San Francisco, with regional offices and operations centers in London, Boise, Washington, D.C., and the New York metro area, MarkMonitor is the global leader in enterprise brand protection. More than half the Fortune 100 depend on MarkMonitor to help safeguard their brands online.
Google probably sees it as more beneficial to let someone else handle it rather than do it themselves.

In Google apps they have an option to register a domain if you do not own one. Who is their domain partner?
