VOIP colocation recommendations?
I have 5 1u servers running linux for VOIP outbound calling that I am looking to co locate. Can anyone offer any recommendations? We currently terminate through bandwidth.com and qwest. A qwest uplink would be ideal. I have just been having a hard time finding someone that seems well suited. I have looked at Icelabs, Alpha Red, Handynetworks, Calpop, Wholesale Internet to name a few.
My main concern is that the majority of our traffic terminates through qwest and that their 1 ip will receive 90% of our traffic. My second concern is price, we need a chunk of dedicated bandwith (up to 10mb).
And cyber centers are out, too expensive and too big.

Hi,
You could have a word with Scott over at synapseglobal.com ( http://synapseglobal.com/). They have good network connections there and he's clued up about network requirements for VOIP.

Matt-
I looked them up, like the prices, they seem to have a good history, but I'm unable to find a single statement from a customer on-line.... Not that this is neccesarily a bad thing, but not a ringing endorsement, any help here? Do you have personal experience with this company?

I've got a VPS with them. I've only had it for a little while but so far the VPS and support have been good.
I should also mention that I did some sys admin work for them a while back.
Like you said, they've been around for a long time so hopefully you'll get some recommendations from other folks.

So I suppose i should offer a little bit more information. We do VOIP outbound calling and need a co lo with excellent price on bandwidth as we have not moved on to high compression codecs. Any good bandwidth prices?
Also in RE: to ydonchenko, what is your experience and usage of telx 60 hudson..

Ydonchenko-
They look good to me, I haven't had any contact back yet. They seem inaccesible from their website, do you have problems working with them in case of trouble?
We are located in the western US and conduct the majority of our business here, so I would probably go with one of their other centers. They look to be an excellent company though. How are their prices? They look to be expensive....

We have a POP at telx 60H and they are not bad when it comes to problems. The downside however is the place is like a sauna.

Qwest only internet will cost you a lot more it won't be "cheap". If you go with a Cogent only it would fit your "cheap" requirement.

That's been my general discovery as well, we are currently served by a Qwest up-link through our ISP, which is almost direct, and a little on the pricy side. It is not through Qwest though, so I suspect it is still cheaper. Due to the performance of our current connection though, I would still prefer to use a location with an actual Qwest up-link.
And for this reason I'm still having split impulses. We currently have a clear-fiber connection for our 1 tower server in the office, it pings 33ms to our termination IP in 6 hops, pretty stellar by my book, but it's it's <em>in-state</em> origination tag, to "play by the books", causes us horrible intrastate minute rates.
So right now I'm debating the costs of sending the servers out of state when our current connection is 10ms faster. It would seem that for performance and cost purposes our current server location (between the main switch and the fiber up-link, just behind the filing cabinet) is fantastic for our long term model in terms of overhead costs and accessibility, but addresses a market we haven't broken into yet, national level sales.
For the short term its looking like we may just fake it for a month and save up for those tasty but expensive g729 licenses we so badly need.
<rant>
I.P. is all fine and dandy but this technology is way too expensive for a standard start-up. We are mostly self financed with a micro-lender loan (5-6k max working capital), so 3-5k is a pretty daunting number for just a minimum usable capacity.

Graham,
Where are you located? It would be a good idea to make sure you get great ping times to the provider you choose. Any provider should be able to provide you with an IP to test the ping times.
Good luck!

Just make sure you pick a colo without Cogent in the mix honestly. That is one of the ones you will get a lot of packet loss with. We have an XO/Mzima blend we use with our VoIP products and it has been flawless and latency hasn't been an issue. A lot of providers like these 2 will have Qwest in their blend since they will be peering or getting some of their transit from them. Any higher tier blend is what you should be looking for.
