    Lightbulb Set First Virtualized Server

We are in need of a linux setup for a custom perl/postgres application and also a windows 2003 microsoft SQL instance.

I was thinking of buying a beefy Dell 1u server:

(TWO) Quad Core Intel Xeon E5410, 2x6MB Cache, 2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB
    8GB 667MHz (4x2GB), Dual Ranked DIMMs
RAID 1 PERC6i SAS RAID Controller, 2x4 Connectors, Int, PCIe, 256MB Cache
    (TWO) 146GB 15K RPM Serial-Attach SCSI 3Gbps 3.5-in HotPlug Hard Drive

Then installing vmware and running both a linux flavor instance and a windows 2003 instance concurrently.

If have no experince with this, and wondering what you guys think. We want to keep costs low, and noticed vmware esx is expensive, but their version esxi is quite a bit lower. Also, dell sells a pre-packaged server solution with something called Virtualization Hypervisor Option.

Thanks for the input and feedback.
