Setting up SMTP server

Hi,

I am trying to set up a mail server on my Dedicated server,

I am running debian atm and have setup exim4 and got it working for receiving email and webmail. Basically I want to be able to set up the mail account in Thunderbird on a computer then connect to my server to send emails.

Cheers

I'm not really sure what your question is, could you go into a little more detail on what's keeping you from doing this?

This probably belongs best over in the technical forum.

If it is configuration of Firefox, then the documentation is over at mozilla.org. If you mean setting up pop3 on exim, then see exim.org.

Reading back that was a badly worded question lol.

RIght I have a working Exim4 email that receives email for a number of domains and using virtual hosts sorts it out into individual mail boxes. THe mail is virus checked and can then be read using IMAP or POP.

THe problem I have is that my ISP wont allow me to send email over their mail server unless its from one of their email accounts. THis means that I need to set up my exim4 servers as an SMTP server as well.

I have kind of got it working atm but it takes about 5 seconds for the connection to be checked and the email sent. Also CLamav has to be run as Root otherwise the mails get rejected when the connection to the server is made stating it cannot find a unix socket or the connection is refused.

Is it a security risk using Clamav as root?

Yes, there is a security risk running clamav as root; just like there is in running anything as root. A compromise in the software will lead to your system being wide open to all kinds of attacks; since the compromise would run as root.

I have set the user back to Clamav but I`m getting an error in thunderbird saying there is a temporary problem.

The paniclog for exim has

2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp malware acl condition: clamd: unable to connect to UNIX socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl (No such file or directory)

and the mainlog says
2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp malware acl condition: clamd: unable to connect to UNIX socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl (No such file or directory)
2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp H=5ad1f586.bb.sky.com ([###.###.###.###]) [###.###.###.###] F=<email@address.com> temporarily rejected after DATA

any ideas what is causing this? and how to fix it?

Fix your clamav.conf file.
