Thumbs up My advise with webhosting !

    Hello

i have been with loads of hosting companys and currently own my own. If you are new and are considering buying hosting here is my advise.

If you see an advertisement on a forum that offers you unlimited everything take into consideration they may not offer very good customer service. People say money rules the world meaning the cheaper something is the better.

This however is not the case. Lets say you got unlimited hosting, but there was a problem DONT EXPECT 24HOUR SUPPORT, and remember there is no such thing as unlimited, everything is limited !

I say go with a company that offer 24hours live chat support, they dont offer 600TB disk and 598 TB banwidth, for one reason YOU DONT NEED IT ! But you do need support as what if there is a problem !

    Bottom line

    Dont be fooled by scams

I agree with everything you've just said apart from the live chat part.

There are some great hosts that offer decent specs without livechat, don't rule them out!

Alot of hosts do offer 24/7 support via support tickets or telephone - which is often many times more useful than live chat is.

Before choosing a host you should try out their support systems... whether it's LiveChat, Email ticket support, telephone support or whatever... test them at various times and see how quickly they respond. That will give you a good idea of what to expect once you sign up.

    Good luck

So true. I have learnt from bitter experience, having someone you can get in contact with and who can resolve any issues is vitally important. Far more important than any fancy features you don't need.

yea, it is fact, undertanding need of hosting is very important. consider business concept before choosing....

and test for company support before order. it is common sense to do it, because you will be in business for period of time.

I think the most important is the 24*7 customer suport. Also there are tool to check the server uptime.

In my experience, many hosting issues could be labeled in the marginal category. Support issues where a customer requires assistance on how to create a database won't wake precedence over more severe issues, so 24 hours in many cases, can not be ruled out either.

    Brittain93,

I totally agree with you, the sad part is that most Customers don't look at it that way and want a bunch of everything for almost nothing. But then they are very upset when things start to go wrong. Its a catch 22 Situation

As far as I know, many web hosts offering 500+ GB of space hosts those accounts in a 1TB servers or if not in a LVM setup of 2-4TB space. Overselling comes here ofcourse, but their support is one of the bests in the industry.

It's their marketing dept, which offers 500 GB space and all of them have legally obliged ToS where they can host files for their website and can't use it for file hosting.

So in that situation, do anyone really use unlimited even if you are offered one ? I will say that it is the support that matters the most.

You should also consider the backup system. At the minimum, offsite backup should be available. Alternative or redundant servers at a geographically different location should be a must for critical services.

You're completely right, if you want to be the next Yahoo, than 500 TB would be ust fine!

  14. This is the sort of thing that is putting me off the "Swamp" package with HostGator, Surely this cannot be a good service with unlimited space and bandwidth? Or is HostGator an exception to this rule?

Your all right. I'd love to one day go onto a "Unlimited Disk Space" host, and fill it with A few hundred TB's of data, to see what they say.

But they probably incoporated a failsafe in their T&C's.

Unlimited is never "unlimited". Just be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully before committing. Some hosts spell out the actual limits, and the associated fees for exceeding the limits. Others claim they do not set any arbitrary limits, but they always add that they reserve the rights to place limits as they see fit.

I agree with this 75%. Tho' I have been with a hosting Company that offers 9 Hour support (Live chat), and 15 hours, Support Tickets, But if it's a problem and they don't get back to you within 24 hours, they credit you account up to $3.00 USD everytime. Which i never had this problem. So the thing about support. I sorta disagree in a way.

Unlimited plans are designed to remove user's worry about their websites. As long as the provider can provide all of these, then I believe there would be no problem.

The problem starts when the provider can't manage a lot of clients in case he oversell their servers. They'll lose their clients, reputation, name, etc.

So if the provider is there for a long time offering unlimited plans, maybe that's a good sign that they are reliable, they can "really" provide unlimited plans, etc.

I think kubuntux hit the nail right on the head with this one.
As long as you can provide for your customer it shouldn't be an issue.

I know that a lot of people have been very negative towards these kind of plans, because of course their never is such thing as unlimited persay but If you can keep expanding to meet your users needs and provide the support they need without tarnishing your name, then this truly is a good offering for customers who don't want to worry about restrictions.

Just make sure it is priced right so that you are not taking great losses on it.

Yes, that's right. They be very negative on this as long as they are thinking about the impossibility of the providers to provide unlimited plans. We should think this way: Unlimited plans are not designed to scam other people, they are designed to remove their worries. However, I am not saying that all providers of unlimited plans are good. Just read their terms of service to make sure that they are really the one you are looking for.

The provider should also know how to monitor and handle unusual things on their business like disk space abuse, etc. They should know how to communicate with their clients professionally in case they are in doubt about them.

In plain words: Providers of unlimited plans should be very professional that gives the best support possible, the price is reasonable, and smart.

We can't deny, lot of people still go for unlimited plans.

No doubt about that, customer supports always come first in any service industry. if i were to resell domains and hosting, i would not want my site to be in downtime and losing data...it keeps my customers away!! jus make sure that my sites functioning properly and pls respond in prompt whenever there are issues!! 1 min wil cost thousands in business!!

I totally agree with Brittain93. What you want is good service. But like all things sometimes a brand name is more expensive. So do some research. You shouldn't pay more than 2 bucks a month for hosting. Try to get a hosting supplier that uses cpanel. There are so many tutorials out there about cpanel it wont be hard to get help if ever there is trouble with your hosting.

I've seen hosting companies that offers great support via ticket system even thought they dont have 24/7 live chat.
And yes, unlimited is not advisable to go.

Great Points, but sometimes people are valued by the service they provide.

Just another attack on services providing unlimited hosting.

I personally use hosting from unlimited hosting companies, they provide up to the minute support.

I think people should stop using the "nothing is unlimited" tactic of trying to bring down web hosts that do that genuinely!

I certainly agree with this, but IMO all companies need Live Chat.
Most clients prefer it for that 'always-there' support, that a ticket system can't always give...

Elisha, no company can provide unlimited services 'genuinely' -
The whole concept is far from genuine...
I can personally use up ANY unlimited quota's within a matter of days,
anyone could if they wanted to...

Unlimited offers are dis-honest right from the start.
Companies that sell unlimited services spend more time justifying the word unlimited than offering real support, that's a fact.

Is this thread 3 years old...sweet.

I would agree that support is very important, but if your using a host that runs properly you will rarely need help since everything will always be running the way it should be at all times.

The reason support seems great on unlimited hosts is because they need a way to keep you with them since all sorts of problems will be ongoing which is why they have to be there at all times. Packing a whole bunch of websites on a hard drive (that is not unlimited) will eventually wear out the equipment and create other issues like data loss or slow loads.

Unlimited Hosting = all hard drives have a limit

All You Can Eat Stop = everyone's stomach have a limit

Free Gas Contest = every vehicle's fuel tank has a limit
