    Hi,

Are you running these commands as a normal user or as root user?

    Have you tried slocate also?

Which flavor/distro is the server running?

You probably don't have the package installed. Try:

    yum install slocate

Looks like slocate has been replaced by mlocate in Centos 5.
Could be a problem with yum not able to locate and dowload the mlocate rpm.
Can you manually download this mlocate rpm and try rpm -ivh <mlocate-... .rpm?

    What about running :

    /usr/bin/updatedb

If that works, are you logging in as another user, then su'ing to root? If you are, make sure that you switch to root using this:

    su -

    Then try running your commands.
