    Question httpd.conf Question

I have a VPS Web Server with the following stats.

    # Guaranteed Equal Perpetuity CPU
    # 768MB - Minimum Guaranteed SDRAM
    # 40GB SATAII Disk Storage
    # 500GB Monthly Transfer
    # Virtuozzo Power-Panel

It runs Cpanel WHM and Apache 1.3.41

I want to know what settings I should have in my httpd.conf for optimum performance. Specifically the following commands.

Currently I am having a problem where I will come home and my sites are extremely slow. I check "top" and there are like 100 httpd prcesses showing all at the top of the list. The host says they are causing the problem. They suggested to edit httpd.conf

    What settings do you recommend?

    StartServers
    MinSpareServers
    MaxSpareServers
    MaxClients
    MaxRequestsPerChild

Actually, have you checked into running the VPS Optimized version of cPanel? It's quite robust while having minimal impact on RAM usage. That would be the first thing that I would suggest, even before altering your httpd.conf file.

I'm just using what my host installed. How can I check if its the VPS version or not. If its not, is there a way to change it to the VPS version, or will I lose everything?

Before I get into showing you how to update to the latest version, there are a couple of important things you need to remember.

First, most hosting providers will not support Alpha (EDGE) or Beta (RELEASE) versions of cPanel... so if you run into problems/issues, you will need to downgrade back to CURRENT or STABLE releases.

Second, since this is essentially Alpha and Beta software, there may be undesired consequences of running these versions. Know what you're doing and know how to research any potential issues both on here and on http://forums.cpanel.net

Third, even after you get onto the VPS Optimized version (that should get your cPanel RAM usage down to ~180 Megs), there are further tweaks that can be done to get you down to right around 129 megs of RAM usage. You will, however, need to do your research in the technical forums here on WHT and on cPanel's forums first, so you can see what all needs to be done.

With those caveats in mind, you can upgrade to the EDGE release via WHM's Upgrade Configuration utility and then do the upgrade manually.

Please, do your homework first before you do the upgrade. It'll save you a lot of potential headaches later on down the line.

Ok, I'm using the optimized cpanel version, can someone still provide a sample httpd.conf file from a VPS. I dont need the whole thing, I am interested in the following:

    StartServers
    MinSpareServers
    MaxSpareServers
    MaxClients
    MaxRequestsPerChild

I just want to make sure mine is setup somewhat correctly given the specs of my machine. Please post Mid Ranged VPS's only.
