Reseller - Managed VPS - namaged dedicated ?

I am thinking of upgrading from reseller to something more powerful (??)

    I need a server with

    fast response times
    99.9% uptime
    fast support when trouble arises
Having an easy control panel is a must
But I don't want to bother with managing the server (setting up, upgrades etc)

My sites are mostly brochure sites but have some database driven sites

Some of the sites do get up to 1000 uniques a day but I would not consider them resource hungry (not too much processing is done) but I want to let myself some room to grow (thinking about more complicated sites with SQL queries with joins etc)

    my questions
    ---------------------------------
Will a VPS or Dedicated be an improvement ?? when considering response times and server availability.

Will I need to look for "Fully managed" service ?? is it different from just "managed"

Does VPS automatically mean that the server is managed ??

Can a good reseller hosting satisfy my needs ?? considering the fact that I need the option to host more database hungry sites in the future.

Can anybody give advice for a budget of $50 - $100/ month

Am I asking for too much ??

PS sorry if this seems like the question everyone asks but I have asked similar question in the past and even after reading lots of threads I was still not clear

With that budget, you are seeking for vps only. I doubt anyone can give you a good *fully managed* dedicated server at that price. How about your sites? Running on Linux or Windows platform?

    About your questions

    1. Can not say exactly if VPS or dedicated server can be a big improvement. Sometimes, clustered-shared hosting is still better than old/low-end vps, dedicated server

    2. *managed* services are varies from vendors. But *fully managed* means you can create, edit accounts from control panel, the host will take care all other things (that's why it costs money)

    3. No, please do not assume vps is managed.

    4. 1000 uniques visits per day is not a big number, you can be still fine on a reseller account. However, you will need to review all the sites in your account, not only some

    Hope this help.

thanks a lot for the answers

its probably true that for my budget its not easy to get a managed dedicated
server. When I said one of the sites get 1000 uniques I meant it as a maximum (most of my sites get less than 200 visitors per day)

    can you (or anyone) explain

what it means to actually manage the server on my own ??

Do I have to make sure to update the operating system with updates/pathces ?? Do I need to bother with the security of the server ?? what else ??

Do the hosting company usually provide support in case of trouble ?? or some initial guidance for newbies like me ??

With that amount of visits, you can be fine with a reseller account. If you are not happy with current settings, you should check with your host first.

For VPS, server management, yes, you will need to make sure the OS, software are up-to-date. Security, yes, a big thing. Optimizing software, another task requires more technical skill. The host can provide supports in some cases, but if you go with unmanaged server, you might need to pay in some cases for them to fix issues for you. I cannot say more details, cause this is really different between vendors, as mentioned above.

You gain some flexibility in software installed with a dedicated or VPS compared to a reseller account. You also have dedicated resources to your VPS.

Will I need to look for "Fully managed" service ?? is it different from just "managed"
You will see many variances in this. One provider may call fully managed a unmanaged VPS. IMHO what fully managed means:

    - Monitoring
    - Security
    - Backup
    - Patch management and upgrades

Does VPS automatically mean that the server is managed ??
No in most cases it is not.

VPSes are much more flexible than a reseller account.

That price while slightly low is not unreasonable.

You will have the root access to the server and you will be able to install/run any applications you want which you can't do on the shared servers. However on the shared servers you share system resources with other accounts. In case your accounts will be hosted on the VPS, the processes which take too much resources will be automatically killed.

Will I need to look for "Fully managed" service ?? is it different from just "managed"
Fully managed means that you do not need to monitor your VPS/dedicated server. Your webhosting company will monitor it for you and in case something happens on the server, they will repair it immediately.

Unmanaged service means that you will be responsible for any actions on your server and in case some services fail on the server, the hosting company will not start them unless you submit a ticket for them to start the services.

Both managed and unmanaged services should include backups.

Does VPS automatically mean that the server is managed ??
Some hosts have managed and unmanaged VPS and others only managed or only unmanaged.

Can a good reseller hosting satisfy my needs ?? considering the fact that I need the option to host more database hungry sites in the future.
VPS's much better if you want to change some settings on your VPS or run some software which can't be installed on the shared servers. But your resources will be limited and you will not be able to share them with other accounts.

Can anybody give advice for a budget of $50 - $100/ month
In this case you can purchase a VPS.

I think you should go for a managed VPS. See what you get in a root access, what settings you can change, learn your way up to learn server management and then go for a dedicated. Secondly, even your budget doesn't permit a decent managed dedicated.

you can get a dedicated server within your budget, as seen from this post :

and these guys are really good and professional.

    Thanks everyone for you replies

I can handle monitoring and backups
because I do them anyway with my reseller accounts

but I usually don't like to bother
with OS updates and Server Security patches
are n't those usually handled by the host ?

With a fully managed VPS, you don't need to worry about OS updates and security. But with unmanaged VPS, it's your responsibility.

If you would like a VPS, check out Hostpenguin.net
For a dedicated server in that range, check out Burst.net
They will not have fully managed however in that price range
