I think their approach is quite unique. If you search the forums here, you will find a post by the CEO that explains in more details what the split-shared technology is all about.
I think just because they allow adult hosting they will not have bogged down servers, and even if that part of the server is overloaded, the split-shared technology will make sure that other clients on different nodes will have no problems with other nodes overloading.
Overall they seem to run a tight ship. I had an account with them, but cancelled that because from my location pings weren't that great and connections seemed a bit sluggish, but that's just a geographical matter.
They have a huge money-back guarantee and there are some great coupons out there for their services, so you could try them out and see if you like 'em.
From the looks of their site they are very open and have developed some interesting technology, I can't comment on whether or not it would be better for you to choose a VPS set-up, but if you like what they have to offer then their price seems to be relatively low.
Or, give their support a call and ask them for a trial period so that you can determine if their hosting fits your needs. If they accept you get some free hosting to test out and if they refuse all you lost was a few minutes of your time. Being that they are a small startup, they will be more interested in getting vocal customers.
Split-shared hosting is nothing but a brand name. Sears, Walmart, Meijers. Same concept, different brands.
Split-shared hosting would be like having separate rooms in your house. While if a fire starts in one room, the first things to go will be the stuff in that room, but if the fire is big enough the whole house is still going to burn down.

Just would like to add to that "While if a fire starts in one room, the first things to go will be the stuff in that room and u too if you are in it too, after which it really doesnt matter (as to what is share-hosting or anything) cause ur now deadz !! "
An i always thought shared hosting was like sharing your hosting account with a buddy of yours ! Damn the technology its getting too advanced for the bunny !!

“An electrical explosion and fire Saturday at a Houston data center operated by The Planet has taken the entire facility offline. The explosion at 5 pm Saturday has affected 9,000 customer servers, and the company says it hopes to restore service by late Sunday afternoon. No servers or network equipment were damaged by the explosion, but the data center is without power. The Planet said it is working with the fire department and its facilities staff to restore power and get servers back online.”
