i need to move data ASAP

ok here is what i need to do and im hoping for exact instructions

    OLD COMPUTER-
PC on slow internet (so i wont use ftp)
    Windows XP
Outlook Express (i need to transfer to new computer)
important files on two drives (about 8 gigs)
    no DVD

    NEW COMPUTER
    laptop on wireless
    vista
    outlook
    DVD

so... theoretically i can sit the laptop right next to the old computer if i need to. IF moving files requires a cable PLEASE link me to a photo as i have a ton of cables here and dont know which is which!

    TIA

Use a cross over ethernet cable to link both machines then copy the files over..

If you have a card in your camera then just get a card reader, so then you can transfer details onto card then onto computer wipe it clean that do same again.

If you need to do it now and you don't know exactly how take it to somebody who does. Best Buy or someone like that should be able to do it. Or find a local geek/coworker who eats this stuff for lunch.

a crossover cable would be the fastest but you'd have to make/buy one if you don't have one.

FTP stuff somewhere, then down it on the other computer. Or email it to yourself. Burn a CD. Depends on the size of data.

Crossover (3rd recommendation) if you network ports on both computers. Otherwise, 1GB USB disk or burn DVD+/-RWs to move it if you have a writer in the old comp.

Otherwise, I'd go spend the $10-$20 on a USB stick and get it done.

Edit: Yank the HDD out and stick it in a USB HDD enclosure if you have one. That's another option.

For future reference a real handy gadget to have for just such an "emergency" is the Tornado, http://www.thetornado.com/tornado-about.asp

In the past, when I have needed to do this; I've just networked the two computers together; then sent the files over my network connection. It might be a bit complicated if you aren't familiar with networking though.

I like HostingDeals' idea of taking out the HD and buying an enclosure. This can also act as an external harddrive for you -- allowing you to get a seperate spot(perhaps for backups?)

but I'd definately recommend getting a USB flash drive. they are VERY handy. You can pretty much use them everyday to store all your files.

Do you have a network setup?

Just share the hard drive on the old computer and copy it over to the laptop.
