    Reseller question

What are some basic things I should know before I look into buying a reseller account? Maybe some other not so basic things I need to know too later on in the future that might help?

-just a noobie trying to get started

What is your purpose for the reseller account? Do you have multiple websites that you'd like to be able to host yourself, or are you looking to start up a hosting business?

A few things you should consider:
    + Windows or Linux platform
    + Control panel preference
    + Disk space and bandwidth
+ Can you upgrade easily later on, bigger plan or even dedicated server.

If you don't have much experience in hosting business, you should start up with a linux reseller account & cPanel
It's easier to manage and provide support for your clients.

    Choose quality over price!

It's easy to get tempted with 7GB/200GB for $7/mo offers but resist the temptation!

If you're in it for the long haul, always think ahead and keep overhead cost to a bare minimum while providing good, if not great service to your customers.

    Good luck in your endeavors.

You must know what do you need.

    Here are a few questions:-
Do you have a business plan?
    Do you have a niche?
Do you need a billing system to bill your clients?
Can you support your hosting clients?
    What is your budget?

I'd suggest you take a good look in the running a web hosting business section on this board, I think there are even some tutorials there.

Once you think you have a handle on it, find a couple of hosts and talk to them, its the easiest way to get an idea of the host and go from there.

Thanks a lot for the info guys, but a few more questions...
-What kind of money should I be looking at spending to start up? I know it depends on how much space I want and other things but can someone just give me a ballpark price?
    - Also, what are some different ways that i can provide support to my customers?
    - Does my reseller account provide any ways I can provide support?
    -What exactly is cPanel?
    - Does cPanel and Linux take a lot of experience? or is it pretty easy to pick up and learn?

I would recommend expanding your knowledge of the industry before investing a lot of money in a company. In order to keep a web hosting company afloat, you will need to provide affordable prices, efficient support, and minimal downtime. As for the difficulty level of cPanel, I would say that it is very simple to learn. It's one of the most basic web control panels on the market, but very powerful.

    A. At least a couple hundred dollars, even if you get a plan for sub $50 you want to make sure you can run it and any software you get for at least 3 months with no income as it can take that or longer to get customers. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

    - Also, what are some different ways that i can provide support to my customers?

A.Through tickets/emails (WHMCS can do this or something like Kayako) Or live chat on your site (liveperson or kayako's chat soft)Phone support as well if you can do it.

    - Does my reseller account provide any ways I can provide support?

    A. Some provide support/billing software and some even offer "end user support" which means they support your customers for you through a support medium (such as whmcs or kayako).

    -What exactly is cPanel?

A.cPanel is a control panel that allows you to manage hosting accounts and various other functions.

    - Does cPanel and Linux take a lot of experience? or is it pretty easy to pick up and learn?

    A. cPanel you can learn fairly quickly, but linux will take a lot longer depending on what your tryint to learn to do exactly.
I replied to your questions in the quote, I hope that helps.
