If we only compare one cpu core from core 2 duo say e6600 versus a pentium 4 server with 3 ghz. Which cores is better?

Core2Duo, by a long, long way. A 1.8GHz clocked core on a Core2Duo is by far more efficient and 'powerful', clock-for-clock, than the Pentium 4.

    a Core2Duo E6600 vs P4 3.0, the C2D E6600 is not even a fair comparison... its a different league.

the power savings is the real benefit, at least from the providers prospective.

P4's are definitely old news. Even when it comes to older Celerons vs. new ones, the architecture has greatly changed.

Yep, the single core Celeron 430 will perform better than a 3.0Ghz Pentium 4, from the benchmarks we've been running. The Core 2 Duo is then basically two of those Celeron cores, plus a higher clock speed, faster FSB, more cache, etc. No competition.

The new Celerons will out pace those P4's and use 1/3 the power...
