Backup site to desktop external HD

    Hello all,

I am wanting some advice. I have a script that will create a compressed backup file of my website files as well as a compressed backup file of my mysql databases.

What I want to do is create a script that will site on my external hard drive that will be connected to the internet and would have it automattically connect to my webhosting account (via ssh or ftp) and download the specifid backup files everyother day. My goal is to be able to have a backup file on my local hard drive here in case anything happens to the backups that are already saved to another webhosting server.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

You can automate the process of logging in,running the script and downloading the files with an autoit script or a vbscript.

I think the WHG FTP Backup script (http://www.webhostgear.com/index.php?art/id:174) will be of use to ya.

Yep, works great. We've moved to an rsync setup now though.

I have a script for MySQL dumps too if you want that?

It would be better to have a backup account (from Bqbackup etc.) and run those scripts from there. No need to keep your PC open 24h a day... And download those backups to your external HD every week or month. This is what I do and works fine.

    I started using http://www.webhostgear.com/index.php?art/id:174
which seems to be working fine.

I know I could just use one of those online backup services but I like the control and safety of knowing that my backups are on equipment that I own and that only my backups are on them. I just don't like the idea of reliying on another company to store and keep my backup data safe.

    Thanks all for your suggestions
