well, like in life the online society is divided in different herds according to their interests. You have to find the right social network where your potential prospects are hanging out. Then join it and start building an authority username.

I don't look at the social network as a marketer even I want to get traffic from them. the best you can do is to:

- Create good profile
- Add interesting stories (but not yours only)
- To communicate with other members
- To understand each social network and to be in favour of other members

Was anyone actually asking for a script to run your own social network?

IMO you should not think about SMM in terms of products but in terms of ideas.

If you can provide interesting content and ideas (sure you can weave your products into them a bit) people will become interested in you, your ideas and your website and that is what brings the traffic from SMM.

To be a SEO pro this days one should not only know the way the search engines work but you should also be a good psychologist, you should talk to people and make people like you. To drive some traffic you should be a part of multiple communities. Have anyone tried this? I find it complicated after years working with the search engines to start working with people now and for some reason the usual communication takes much more time and efforts than looking for a good backlinks. I was really amazed by statistics when within less than a year time the number of daily unique visitors of the social networks increased over 200%. There is no guarantee that your product will be liked even if you are in the featured or on top and you have to try it over and over again.
The reason I think more and more people are joining the network- the are being bored. They are looking for new impressions, acquaintances and they'd like to relax from the daily routine. It seems pretty complicated to sell them some serious product at that moment or catch their attention to visit the hosting or website design website. But still people exchange info, so hiring a large number of people and having them sit all the day round in the social networks telling the other people about your product during a friendly conversation is a good way to get more traffic...but what one SEO person can do?

That's all Well and Good, but remember that one of the big advantages of SEM is that you put your message in front of the prospect at the exact time that they are interested in it, while you don't have that advantage with SMM.

the thing is, you have to offer your products to people who care, to people that are already interested in such products. That is why you have to use the right social networks. Otherwise you will be ignored as well as your product, service or whatever it is that you offer. Presenting your products to people who want them is the key.
