    Questions to Host

    Hello Everyone,

I have a few questions I'd like to ask as I am wondering what to do about a situation I stumbled across yesterday. I googled the name of my company Host Phenom as I wanted to see results. I came across another site called Hosting Phenom. The site was created on April 7th of this year which is months older then mine. http://loneua.com is where i found the Hosting Phenom site and I went to whois the domain hostingphenom.com and it is registered by jbox network which is a company that registers domains for people if they use the forum on there site and earn points. http://jbox.us is there site URL.

I noticed many things wrong with there site. Many mispellings (including information all over there site referring to themselves as Hybrid Host and not Hosting Phenom), it's hosted by a free host, the tech support is down, ordering is down, and many other things. My problem with this is if someone came to my site and was interested in my services but did the smart thing and googled it to find more information they would come across this other site and notice all these problems with it and it could result in loss of sales.

There was an email provided by the domain whois it is a free yahoo account so I do have means of contacting this person if I do choose.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I am currently out registering the rest of domains with name's close to mine to prevent this in the future. But when I started my company I googled the name and came across nothing that is why I chose it.

You can't do anything really if their name is even slightly different. The hosting market is so huge that companies are fighting for names that are almost identical.

Registering domains that are simular might be a good technique, but make sure that you are purchasing relevant ones.

I have experianced the same problem as you. HydraHost.com is domain that was purchased a few months after mine, and has set up trading for the american market. I own HydraHost.co.uk, so you can see how they might be gaining some traffic from MY hard work.

I'd forget about it, it's enevitable that someone would make a hosting company with a simular name.

Yeah, but it's hard for me to forget when I could be losing sales from it. In your situation the other company isn't selling the same services you are right? If the person put up a professional site, everything was functional and there was a chance it made my company look good when a person googled the name of my company but it's a trashy site with nothing working. I don't want to have to put on my site, Host Phenom has nothing to do with HOsting Phenom

I guess I'll speak with the kid whose reselling with the same name as me, well close to the same name as me and see if we can work out a deal where he takes down the site. I'll even register a new domain for him with a new name.

    Thanks for the input though

Unless you have deep pockets there's not much you can do, except try and reason with them as you said.

Personally i'd do a bit of Search Engine Reputation Management. Basically create profiles on social networking sites, submit to some of the stronger Hosting Directories, submit some articles, hold a competition with your clients where they write a non-bias review of your services for the chance to win a free month and that sort of thing.

What this will do is create a lot of "noise" in the top 20-30 for various queries on your name, and drive their site back to where it's not likely to be found.

It serves a double purpose too, the added backlinks will help to make your "brand" stronger, and rank better for various hosting terms. So it's not like it's a lot of effort just to get rid of them, it helps you in other ways.

    Good luck.

It wouldn't hurt to contact the owner and attempt to acquire the domain. Obviously if the site has various things spelled incorrectly and whatnot, the guy may not aspire to do much with it, leaving it wide open for you to grab it.
He got it for free, maybe a $20 offer will seal the deal?
    Maybe not...
    Good luck.

Would you like pay 100+ for that domain?
If so, just contact him, otherwise, wait for the domain drop.

I don't think he will sell the domain to you for less than 100 if he know your company name is similar to his domain.

I think that it is a time now to talk about parthneship with that company. Or think about rebranding and having new domain names with all extensions in your own. That migh like idea.

If you try to contact the party and they do not reply, that is their choice. You should try to acquire the name.

If you find the contact information is inaccurate though and that is why you can't contact them then you can report them on that basis to the registry for de-listing or action. The domain owner is required to supply the registry with accurate contact information for just such a problem.

thanks for the advice guys, I hope something works out. I mean. My site is still under development itself but I make sure grammer and punctuation as long as the text on graphics are spelt right. Plus I don't upload anything if it doesn't function. It's just a disgrace to see such an ugly site with so much wrong with it called the same name as mine.

I've attempted to contact the information provided to the registry and have had no reply. It's been 5 day's now. I think it's safe to say that this person supplied wrong information to the registrar in order to register the name.

First thing I am going to do is contact the FBox Free Registration network (The web site that registers domains for people that are active in there forums) and see if they will either contact the owner for me or sell me the domain as they are the Billing Contact for the domain.

Will someone who know's a tad bit more then me about a domain whois please do one on hostingphenom.com and explain to me who I should contact on the list. There is probably 4 or 5 different people/organizations listed.

    Regards,
