Question Looking for a personal website host

Hi, this my first post here at Web Hosting Talk.

Right now I'm looking for a web host for a personal site. It will primarily constitute of a blog (I don't know which yet but I'll need Mysql/PHP, for certain). It may include some static pages as well, maybe even a forum.

However I do have some specifications I've been having a hard time finding after poring over several Terms of Services. These are mostly concerning content.

First of all my blog/forum may end up containing topics of a sexual nature. Therefore any ToS that states "no obscene content" or "no pornography" is out of the question for me. Note, though, that I'll have no images/video/audio sexual content, only text, and it will be very small scale (no story submissions by others. Only my own writing and possibly a friend's or two.)

Second, my site may include roleplaying aspects -- as in text based, blog / forum type roleplay. I was boggled and amazed to find at least one host that actually disallows RPGs, but allows pornography (no child pornography though, I don't want anything to do with that).

So, if anyone out there knows of a webhost that would allow me to make a personal site/blog with such content, please let me know. I'm looking for something in the realm of $6-10 a month. Thanks!

P.S. Shell access is also preferred. Though I could probably live without it.

The host I use that does allow those as I have those is everity.com and you can make a custom plan and yse Shell to the point of SSH is an option unless you need more then ssh.

    Hi,

Many hosts can offer you this solution along with jail-shell access for free as long as you just need it for simple command line things etc.. and I think $10/mo is just the right price for what you need and a reputable/solid hosting company.

Good luck with your search, just look around

    Surisha,

    Welcome to Web Hosting Talk!

Numerous hosting companies out there should be able to meet your needs. I would recommend to start your search here in offers section at webhostingtalk. Choose a company that looks good, and shoot a support ticket out to that company to double check that they allow the content you want up on your site - this will also allow you to check out their support response time .

    Good luck on the search.

RPGs games are usually disabled because of the resources usage (too many IO resources used)
    Shared Web Hosting - Reseller Hosting - Semi-Dedicated Servers - SolusVM/XEN VPS
    LiteSpeed Powered - R1Soft Continuous Data Protection - 24/7 Chat/Email/Helpdesk Support
    Cpanel/WHM - Softaculous - R1soft Backup - Litespeed - Cloudlinux -Site Builder- SSH support - Account Migration
DowntownHost LLC - In Business since 2001- West/Center/East USA - Netherlands - Singapore

Yes, I discovered that from looking around on WHT a bit.

However not all RPGs are high traffic, some are quite small (the one I would host would have 3-4 people). So I found it a bit of a turnoff to see RPGs mentioned as against ToS.

Can't argue with the ToS either way though, so I'll just keep looking. Already finding some leads on a good hosting package, thanks everyone.

Yep I fully understand what you mean.
At one time I was not aware that hosts disallowed those until I had hostgator and they do not allow those and they had suspended my account for having an rpg system which is why I am now using everity for my rpg, arcade, and chat site and we do have a very small place for adults to talk that is password protected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't an actual game that runs on the server, it is basicly just a communication forum for role-playing, correct? In other words, it really isn't that much different than a regular blog or forum. If that is the case, it would depend more on resource usage than on content. The vast majority of blogs and forums are not busy enough to cause any resource-usage problems, so long as they are set up correctly.

I dont think you will have big difficulties finding a webhost who allows adult websites. European hosts usually allow this kind of websites.

Do everity.com give you ssh on all their accounts?

I can't see on their site and they insist on you signing up just to ask questions which is a pain

I would submit a support ticket asking them about SSH access. As already mentioned, it will give you the answer you are looking for as well as an idea of their response times.

    Please do!

Giving all my personal details just to ask a presales question is a major disincentive to me no matter how good others they are!

You do not have to enter payment information or anything like that. Just name, email, and basic contact info. The reason for this is that eVerity offers a 3 month free trial. As you can imagine, this attracts a lot of "host-jumpers." People who have no intention of becoming paying customers. They ask a lot of questions, waste a lot of time, need a lot of help, and basicly create problems for everyone else.

Registration only takes a few seconds, and allows you to show that you are a serious customer, and to receive the attention you deserve.

In answer to your question, yes, it is just as Amy said. SSH is available by request, provided you have a legitimate need for it to be enabled and all of your other information checks out.

Is untarring, chmod, mv, wget etc. sufficient justification?
