Lightbulb A complete experience choosing a VPS (RZ,KH,WT)

WHT posters have been a HUGE help for me in figuring out what new hosts to consider. So many reviews and input makes this process MUCH easier! So I'm posting this with hopes it will offer similar insight and helpful information for other people in such a situation. In short, it is my start-to-finish experience of choosing a VPS... from the research, decision making, and continued experience with the host (will report on that later).

STAGE 1: SELECTING A NEW HOST

My website has been hosted by a Mosso reseller the past 7 months. Overall it was a great experience but because of Mosso plan changes, my reseller has notified me I'm receiving the boot because my site is "too successful" (i.e. you're using too much bandwidth - get lost!).

My site currently requires about 130 Gigs of bandwidth a month (and growing) and I've discovered that typically means I have to seek out a reseller or VPS host. And as anyone who is seeking a new host knows, WHT is the place to come to find the best of the best!

Based on reviews here, my list of considerations is:

    • ResellerZoom (RZ)
    • KnownHost (KH)
    • WiredTree (WT)

I spent all of today researching and contacting these companies. Here's the basic breakdown by plan, cost per month /// space /// bandwidth:

    ResellerZoom Failover1 $25 /// 10G /// 200G
    ResellerZoom Failover2 $40 /// 16G /// 320G
    KnownHost LTX* $34 /// 10G /// 200G
    KnownHost XXLTX* $62 /// 25G /// 325G
    WiredTree VPS 256 $49 /// 30G /// 300G

*additional $60/year added to price for the CP that isn't included

Overall they all offer the same as far as offering MySQL, PHP, Cron jobs, CGI, etc. But there are differences with FTP (which is important for me).

    FTP Differences
I require sub FTP accounts that remain unchanged. What this means is that if I create a sub-account called "TestFTP" it needs to remain "TestFTP". But some FTP setups create add-ons. This means that the "TestFTP" account actually becomes something like "[email protected]". This is true for KnownHost (KH). So if you need specific FTP sub accounts that do NOT have add-ons, bypass KnownHost.

    Sales Inquiry Response Time
I did have pre-sales questions, especially RE: FTP, so I had to contact each host and did so via written means (chat/email/ticket). The best experience (in order):

    1. Reseller Zoom - they have live chat available and I was connected to a sales tech immediately and had my answer just as fast. VERY much appreciated! (although this WAS before 6pm Central Time - after which you have to submit a ticket)
    2. KnownHost - Even though "Chat with Sales" is available, it was actually a form for submitting a ticket. However, response time via email was almost immediate, including back-and-forth inquiries.
    3. WiredTree - so far *very* disappointed. I read on a post here somewhere that response time is 15 minutes, but I sent multiple requests within hours, and have not yet received a response (first inquiry was about 4 hours ago thus far). Maybe that's for support only? The live sales chat was supposedly available but forwarded me to the contact ticket/form. I'm awaiting a response RE: the FTP issue (above), so I may or may not have to add WiredTree to KnownHost's FTP negative.

After hearing back from WiredTree, I'll make my selection and let you know. And, more importantly, I'll continue to update how things go (the transfer/setup process, continued experience months down the road, etc).

    TO BE CONTINUED...

Very interesting thread and I look forward to your updates You really can't go wrong with KH or WT.

If you're still open to suggestions, I would suggest researching LiquidWeb.com and ServInt.net both are huge and offer phone support.

WiredTree also offers phone support but isn't as large or established as those two.

One quick thing, you quoted our "Quarterly price" not "Monthly price". The price below is not Monthly. I figured this would be good to make note of. Those prices were very high so they jumped out at me. Also, the XXLTX I think you mixed up with the XLTX with pricing (resources are correct though).

    KnownHost LTX* $89 /// 10G /// 200G
    KnownHost XXLTX* $117 /// 25G /// 325G

The FTP issues you mentioned, any limitation you have is based on the control panel vendor not the provider. I checked your ticket and cPanel was what we recommended so any cPanel VPS would be the same regardless who you signup with.

Speaking of VPS prices, don't forget to check the VPS Hosting Offers forum for WHT exclusive coupons and specials

KnownHost & LiquidWeb offer coupons on their VPS products.

WiredTree has a listing but everything pales in comparison to their 50% off coupon, which I took advantage of

ServInt rarely has WHT specials but they get plenty of business through word of mouth advertising.

To my knowledge, ResellerZoom hasn't posted any WHT VPS specials.

You're right Jay... I did make a mistake on the pricing of the packages. They are $34 and $62 a month, based on the annual package w/ the CP. And thanks for the extra FYI RE: FTP. I guess the next question would be if KH offers a CP that doesn't do add-ons to FTP sub-accounts.

Thank you for the extra considerations and specials/promo info, Ross - will look into those!

To the best of my knowledge no commercial control panels (Plesk, cPanel, Directadmin) can do that but I may be wrong (I don't know that for sure so someone may correct me).

I am a WiredTree customer and I have never waited for more than 5 minutes on a support ticket responce. I suggest calling the toll free number with any questions.

I have also never heard anything but praise about knownhost. Either of these should make you ver happy. As far as the FTP issue. I do not know of any way for you to setup multiple ftp accounts without using the domain name for sub-accounts.

Just to clarify, our billing and sales departments are not 24/7 so if you contact us outside of normal business hours it can take longer to receive a response. Our support of course is 24/7, and you can expect a much faster response there.

I waited a couple of hours with WiredTree when i signed up because it was outside business hours, but as for support tickets the longest was i think 10 minutes and i have sent several.

This suits me, i only sign up once but i know if i have problems with my sites help is minutes away.

Also i moved from ResellerZoom Failover, and i now know why its named that.. Because the server failed over and over again.

Try with liquidweb, they are the best...

    Exclamation Stage 1 Continued

    Stage 1 Followup:

WiredTree sales responded later that evening, so within 1 day.

Taking the suggestions by RossMan, I also investigated LiquidWeb and ServInt whose specs are by plan, cost per month /// space /// bandwidth:

    LiquidWeb Host Pkg $25 /// 2.5G /// 160G
    LiquidWeb VPS Pkg $60 /// 20G /// 200G
    ServInt Essential $49 /// 15G /// 500G

    Sales Inquiry Response Time:
I was able to chat immediately with LiquidWeb sales on Sunday, which was nice. Unfortunately ServInt sales offers email only responses M-F.

BTW, Knownhost-J is correct: cPanel automatically creates an addon to sub-FTP accounts. I re-verified this with KnownHost's email support (originally their chat tech said otherwise) and contacted and received confirmation from cPanel support. Therefore I could choose from among any of these hosts, since all use cPanel and will require me to change things on my end to accommodate the addon.

    MY NEW HOST CHOICE
That said, I chose ServInt because:

    • Great value - competitive price of $49 a month offers significant more bandwidth than the others.
    • Great reviews - WHT offered great reviews across the board. This was also true for WiredTree and KnownHost (mixed reviews on LiquidWeb and iffy reviews on ResellerZoom) but again, I'm getting better bang for my buck w/ ServInt.
    • Great offers - ServInt offers a 5% discount for 6-month pre-paid and a 10% for 12 months.
    • Great packages - Not only does this smallest/most basic plan offer 500G of bandwidth, but should I need to start exceeding that, there is plenty of room to grow within the same company which is very important to me (you know the hassle of switching hosts all the time!).

I hope that ServInt will be in business for many years to come, and prove to be a reputable company with great support and uptime. But that is to be seen. I'll post again soon with

Yes, I think the main issue is when contacting sales... it's bound to be different than support which is understandable. And also, your RZ failover comment is quite funny! lol! (no offense to RZ of course)

And BTW, thank you to all who offered your input on your own host recommendation. All were considered.

Yep, for weeks i fought to keep the patient alive but after a long drawn out battle i had to tell the family to disconnect life support and let him go. After so many revivals, and temporary fixes i knew the patient would never be the same again. His vital signs were weak and many major neurological functions were failing.

    Stage 2: Trasferring to ServInt

    STAGE 2: TRANSFERRING TO SERVINT

Here's my personal opinion and experience of transferring my site from Mosso host (re-seller) to ServInt VPS.

    Overall score: 8/10

    Registration & Signup 8/10

I purchased my VPS plan on a Thursday night. About 28 hours after registering, a turn-up email was sent with all account info. I'm not sure I would have received it this soon if I had not called and emailed tech support the following Friday evening. I did so because the welcome email states "you can expect your VPS to be set up within 24 hours of sign-up. During the normal Monday-Friday workday (9-5 EST) most VPS turn-ups happen within a couple of hours of payment processing").

    Setup & Transfer 8/10

My webmaster ran into a small php #2002 error that was quickly resolved through ServInt's online NOC ticket system (available through customer portal). Similarly, I had some forms and scripts that needed slight php code modifications to work on this new host which, somewhat understandably, customer support was unable to "fix" because of not knowing php language.

The biggest bump in the road (if you can call it that!) had to do with the DNS. I pointed to the DNS info provided by ServInt but upon doing so my site was unavailable. It took a couple of hours of trial and error to determine it was not anything I could fix, so I contacted ServInt with the issue. I don't recall reading this anywhere (maybe I missed it?), but the tech got back to me with, "When using our nameservers you need to submit a request for the domain to be added to our DNS zone. I have added this Domain to our DNS zone and the site is now working correctly." An important fact to be aware of if you transfer to ServInt and point to their DNS...

Customer Support and Final Notes 9/10

I've contacted ServInt via phone, email, and their online ticketing system. I received prompt or immediate, knowledgeable and helpful replies from each method. The longest wait for a ticket response was 2 hours 20 minutes but that happened only 1 time out of 6. I do wish they had a live online chat system, but the tickets are an acceptable alternative.

Note sure if you already said which was your website, I'm a little curious, you use a lot of bandwidth!

    Best of luck!

You picked some very good hosts on that list and ServInt is a very good value particularly if you need lots of bandwidth. They have some very generous overage bandwidth (25c a gig!) but are a bit less generous with disk space.

Only issue for myself is that I prefer hosts with pro-active monitoring.

ServInt advertises "Proactive Server Monitoring" for their VPS plans. I couldn't find details of what they mean by that...

    ServInt 4-month review

Well, here it is... my "3-month review" was a bit delayed and has turned into a

    4 MONTH REVIEW OF ServInt

    Summary
    In short: GREAT!
Most importantly: my site has been up 100% (to my knowledge).

    Uptime, Uptime, Uptime!

I'm constantly checking in on my website at all hours of the day or night, visiting pages, uploading to the FTP, receiving emails from CronJobs, being the typical obsessed work-a-holic and throughout it all have not had a single experience of downtime.

    Finally.

    Customer Support

I'm very satisfied with the customer support overall. I love being able to open up a ticket with any concern or question I have (i.e. changed the password on a form and messed up everything else on the database) and they help me resolve it (or fix it for me). The one tiny "complaint" (I use the word lightly) I have is that the ticket techs are not all the same. What I mean by that is some of them are very knowledgeable and helpful and resolve issues perfectly. But every once in awhile I encounter someone who is not quite as zealous and doesn't necessarily answer questions or fix things as well as one of their fellow employees might.

But that's peanuts (in my opinion) when considering the grand scale of things!

    Conclusion

No issues! Everything is running smoothly. It's great! After 6 hosts, each with their own various nightmares, in the past year and a half, I'm confident I've FINALLY found my long term website home. Yay!

I thought I would do a 6-month review but that's only a couple months away and I don't foresee anything negative happening in that timeframe (knock on wood!!!). So...

STAGE 4: FINAL 1-YEAR REVIEW (TO BE CONTINUED)...
