Thread: unique IP

    unique IP

    New to dedicated hosting.

I ordered 4 unique IP addresses 2 weeks ago for our server. Have still not had them even though I seem to be constantly chasing the company.

Do they usually take this long? or am I a little impatient?

2 weeks for (only) 4 IPs looks really long too me. Have they given you a reason or status yet?

afraid not, just tried calling the account manager and the number is no longer available.

Message saying the telephone number is temporarily out of order.

The company is UKfast, which I believe is a large UK company.

2 weeks is too long. They should have told you if they need additional steps taken by now. For example if you already have IP's and now asking for 4 more and they need you to justify previous IP use. If they dont want to issue you IP's due to whatever reason they should let you know in a couple of days not weeks.

It's bl**dy annoying, I have asked several times, they have taken the first payment of an additional 8.00 per month and keep promising to send me a form to complete stating why the additional IP's are required.

Seriously beginning to think about breaking the contract with them.

The IP's are needed for 4 SSL certificates.

Hold on, now it sounds like they are asking you for justification.
Justification is required by ARIN for anyone that has more then /29 (last I checked).
This is not something they can (or at least should not try) to avoid.
If they dont justify their IP use to arin then they cant get new IP's when they need them.
So I would just send them the justification form. It is not that hard to complete the form. You can give them reasons why you need dedicated IP and those reasons can be ssl sites for example.
They will not give you IP's if you dont fill out that form and the more you lag on that the longer it takes for you to get the IP's.

    See arin.net for more information

Sorry RIPE would be for European IP assignment, Arin is for U.S. ISP's

Personally, i can say that any IP requests that we get are dealt with in the same day (dependant of course on how long the requester takes to reply to the justification ticket). In fact, usually within a few hours.

2 Weeks is definately wrong (assuming that the host hasn't requested justification).

Probably it's time for you to consider changing your host.

Greg is right. I just went through the regular routine of getting additional netblocks for SingleHop and had to turn in *OUR* justifications for a large portion of our already SWIP'd IPs.

    ARIN policy states:

    "4.2.3.1. Efficient utilization

ISPs are required to apply a utilization efficiency criterion in providing address space to their customers. To this end, ISPs should have documented justification available for each reassignment. ARIN may request this justification at any time. If justification is not provided, future receipt of allocations may be impacted. In extreme cases, existing allocations may be affected."

When developing criteria for adjudicating customer requests, in most cases one can turn to the policies for assigning addresses to end-users.
Specifically, policy 4.3.3. provides key guidance:

    "4.3.3. Utilization rate

Utilization rate of address space is a key factor in justifying a new assignment of IP address space. Requesters must show exactly how previous address assignments have been utilized and must provide appropriate details to verify their one-year growth projection. The basic criteria that must be met are:

    * A 25% immediate utilization rate, and
    * A 50% utilization rate within one year.

A greater utilization rate may be required based on individual network requirements. Please refer to RFC 2050 for more information on utilization guidelines."

The issue we have is: It's been 2 weeks since I have been billed for the additional IP's

I have not received the form to justify why I need them.

I have spoken witht he accounts team 6 times asking for the form to be emailed

Still not received it! So can't even proceed until I complete a form that they wont send me!
