Recommended PSU (500W?)
I am in the process of putting together a new machine to run VPSes and I am having a dilemma with choosing a proper power supply. My setup is:
ASUS KFN4-DRE with dual Opteron 2212s and 16GB RAM (8 modules)
4 500GB WD SATA drives
3Ware controller card
IDE CD-ROM card
On similar setups I was running a single 650W PSU. Would a 500W power supply be able to handle this setup?
Please feel free to comment and criticize my setup, and recommend a PSU manufacturer I should be going with.
500W should be able to handle that.
Yes. Try to shoot for an 80%+ efficient model, for power savings.
Another thought would be a redundant PSU. Certain server chassis can hold larger, redundant power supplies. It's a good option in a mission critical server, as PSUs are often a weak point in the system and prone to failure (though it depends partly on the quality of power the receive and the environment they live in).
This would be better suited in the colo/hardware forum...search google for power supply calculator, you will be able to calculate how much power your server will use.

some of the companies he recommends do make server grade PSU's but you're right for the most part.
